SPRING VALLEY — The Glenwood City girls’ basketball team was in search of not only a second consecutive win, but its second conference victory of the season when it traveled to Spring Valley January 23.
The Hilltoppers appeared to be halfway to attaining both objectives when it held a 27-22 halftime advantage over the Cardinals in the Thursday night contest. But, Spring Valley put in 34 second-half points, 15 more than the Toppers during that span, to claim a 56-46 win and the regular season sweep. Spring Valley prevailed 56-40 in the teams’ December 5 contest in Glenwood City.
Despite a solid first half, the Hilltoppers were unable to hold the lead in the second half as the Cardinals outscored them 34-19 for the ten-point win.
Glenwood City had nine players score points in the game, but just one, Opal Voeltz, finished in double figures. Voeltz finished with 15 points which included a 3-for-4 effort from beyond the three-point arc and she had three steals. Tori Ohman added nine points and six rebounds, Anaka Eliason had six points off a pair of triples and Isabel Davis finished with four points and a team-leading 11 rebounds.
Spring Valley had three players reach double digits led by Jada Hoolihan who topped all scorers with 20 points, had eight rebounds, seven steals and a trio of assists. Teammates Katie Matthys finished with 13 points and Audrey Mathison added 11.
Glenwood City (1-6, 6-8) also had a non-conference game versus Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran postponed by the sub-zero temperatures.
The Lady Toppers hosted Mondovi last evening (Tuesday, January 28) and have a road game against Durand-Arkansaw this Friday. Glenwood City will host Flambeau next Monday, February 3.
