ELK MOUND — Despite a conference-opening loss in Boyceville a few weeks back, the Elk Mound volleyball team had an opportunity to keep pace with Dunn-St. Croix front runner Durand-Arkansaw when it hosted a pair of conference matches last week.
The Mounders were able to earn a hard-fought, four-set win over defending conference champion Spring Valley last Tuesday, October 1 only to come up short against an aggressive Wolves squad from Elmwood-Plum City two days later, losing three sets to two.
Those two most recent conference outcomes left Elk Mound (16-14) in a four-way tie for third place with Spring Valley, Mondovi and Boyceville – each has a 2-2 mark in league games. Durand-Arkansaw sits atop the conference standings with an unblemished 4-0 record while Elmwood-Plum City holds second place at 3-1.
The Mounders will travel to Glenwood City this Thursday for its lone competition of the week. Elk Mound will then close out the regular and conference seasons next week with a pair of home matches. It hosts Mondovi on Tuesday, October 15 and Durand-Arkansaw Thursday, October 17.
Spring Valley
In a match where every set was determined by three points or less, host Elk Mound prevailed in four sets over the visiting Cardinals from Spring Valley.
The Mounders won the first two sets, 28-26 in extended play and 25-22. The Cardinals, who are the defending Dunn-St. Croix Conference champs, responded with 26-24 win in the third set. In yet another tight game, Elk Mound won the fourth set 25-22 to knock off the Cardinals.
Adding to the excitement, was the individual achievement of Taylor Frinack, who scored her 1,000th career assist against the Cardinals.
Elk Mound finished with 59 kills in the match as Lauren Gabert led the way with 13, Kendra Garnett, Loftyn Awe and Savannah Nechanicky added 11 each and Allie Roder tallied nine of the team’s eight ace serves, Claire Roff, Gabert, and Frinack had two apiece. Silona Vang topped the defensive chart with 22 of the Mounders 67 digs, Garnett finished with 16 and Miley Carlton had 11.
Elmwood-Plum City
Elk Mound found itself in another heated battled two days later when it welcomed the Wolves of Elmwood-Plum City to the home hardwood.
Elmwood-Plum City, however, prevailed in the five-set match.
Elk Mound earned a 25-16 in the opening set of the match, but Elmwood-Plum City rallied for a 25-17 win in the second set and captured a 26-24 victory in set three to go ahead two games to one. Elk Mound knotted the contest at two sets all with a 25-22 win in the fourth. The fifth and deciding set went to the Wolves, 15-10.
The October 3 victory allowed the visiting Wolves to take sole possession of second place.
Team and individual stats from the EPC match were not available.
