OSCEOLA — In their only competition last week, the Glenwood City boys’ and girls’ cross country teams had to show a bit of patience when a storm hit the area just as they were about to compete in the Osceola Invitational last Saturday, September 21.
The inclement weather eventually blew through and the race was held.
Featuring several Middle Border Conference schools, and some from the Lakeland and Heart O’ North Conference as well as a couple from Minnesota, the Osceola Invitational provided some stiff competition for the Hilltoppers whose boys’ squad finished fifth out of 13 schools after scoring 157 points. Finishing ahead of Glenwood City were the champs from Park (MN) with a score of 52, followed by Holmen with a 57, Osceola had a 66 and Mahtomedi (MN) tallied 139.
Junior Clayton Hoffman was the first Topper boy to finish Saturday’s race. He ran the 5,000 meter course in 17:58.5 to place 11th. Senior Elliot Springborn took 22nd in 18:53.9, junior Garrett Gross ran a 19:21.1 to finish 29th, sophomore Eli Oberle placed 46th in 19:55.7 and senior Ilan Anderson was the Toppers’ fifth runner to finish line with a time of 20:32.7 which put him in 58th place. Another senior, Zeb Holden, ran a 21:31.1 to take 78th and junior Micah Simmons ran a 21:58.0 which had him finish 89th.
Glenwood City had just three girls compete and therefore did not receive a team score. Kayley Dickmann, a junior, was the first Topper girl to finish the 5K meet taking home 58th place with a run of 25:46.2. Senior Elsja Meijer ran a 26:29.7 to finish 65th and sophomore Erica Bauman came in 82nd with a time of 28:09.9.
Holmen won the girls’ team competition with a score of 20, followed by St. Croix Central at 50 and Osceola copped third with an 88.

Glenwood City eight-grader Jaycie Oberle was the winner of the girls’ middle school race in Osceola. Oberle ran the 2-mile race in 13:18.6 to best her nearest competitor by 10 seconds.
