ELK MOUND — After Osseo-Fairchild canceled its varsity football schedule for this season, it left fellow Cloverbelt Conference schools scrambling to fill the open date.
Elk Mound along with Stanley-Boyd and Fall Creek were able to fill that opening by scheduling Spectrum High School out of Elk River, MN.
The Mounders were the first Cloverbelt school to take on the Sting who traveled nearly 115 miles to Elk Mound last Friday.
The trip home might have seemed even longer after the Mounders squashed the Sting 60-0 in the September 13 contest.
Elk Mound, who put up 32 second-quarter points against the Sting, ran roughshod over the Spectrum defense throughout the contest and finished with 326 yards rushing, a season-high, as senior running back Parker Dutzle amassed 213 of those yards and three touchdowns on just 19 carries.
Fellow classmate Logan Jerome was an efficient 7-for-11 passing for another 91 yards and two touchdowns, both scores went to junior wide out Kamron Diermeier who finished with four catches for 82 yards.
In all, Elk Mound tallied 417 total yards in the shut-out victory.
The non-conference win evened the Mounders season record at 2-2. Elk Mound will return to conference action this Friday when they host Durand-Arkansaw.
Dutzle put the Mounders on the scoreboard with the first of his three rushing scores when he jaunted 11 yards to pay dirt in the first quarter of play. Jerome found Rownan Soul-Stewart open to complete the two-point conversion pass for an 8-0 Elk Mound lead.
The Mounders, however, blew open the contest in the second stanza as they crossed the goal line four times and added the corresponding two-point conversions for an additional 32 points and a 40-0 halftime advantage.
During that 12 minute span of the second quarter, Parker Rhude and Dutzle each broke off long touchdowns runs – Rhude from 36 yards out with Dutzle’s coming from 58 yards out. Jerome tossed a pair of good two-point conversions following those two scores – one to Soul-Stewart while the other went to Diermeier.
Jerome and Diermeier then connected on the other two touchdowns on 6-point catches of 26 and 29 yards. Logan passed to Zach Brantner for the first conversion while Dutzle ran the second conversion try into the end zone as Elk Mound enjoyed a 40-0 intermission lead.
In the third, Elk Mound tacked on two more touchdowns. First, Dutzle ran 31 yards for his third touchdown of the night which was followed by Rhude’s good conversion run. Will Thatcher later scampered 35 yards for the score on his only carry in the game. Despite the ensuing conversion run being stopped short of the goal line, Elk Mound took a 54-0 lead in to the fourth and final quarter.
Rhude capped his evening with a 31-yard run for the Mounders’ and the game’s final score. Rhude tallied 67 yards and two TDs on just four hauls. The conversion run failed but Elk Mound finished with a 60-0 victory.
Defensively, Soul-Stewart tallied nine tackles in the game including four solos. Ian Gerrits and Will Thatcher collected five assisted tackles each while Dutzle finished with a trio of solo takedowns.
