The Elk Mound softball team put itself back in the chase for this year’s Dunn-St. Croix title with a trio of conference wins last week and extended its current win streak to five games.
The Lady Mounders began last week’s play with a 8-1 home win over Durand-Arkansaw on Tuesday, April 23. They then went on the road, besting the Wolves of Elmwood-Plum City 14-7 in a contest played Thursday, April 25 in Elmwood and then defeated Durand-Arkansaw for the second time in three days with a 6-1 victory at the Panthers’ Tarrant Park Field on Friday, April 26.
With those wins, Elk Mound improved to 6-2 in league games and 7-3 overall. The Mounders, who are currently third in the Dunn-St. Croix behind second-place Boyceville and the leaders from Colfax, host three home games this week. They played Boyceville Monday, welcome Glenwood City on Thursday and have a non-conference contest versus St. Croix Central on Friday. The following day, Saturday, May 4, Elk Mound will play in a triangular at Altoona’s Cinder City Park with games against host Altoona and Northwestern.
Durand-Arkansaw-Game 1
In the early innings of their home contest with Durand-Arkansaw on Tuesday, April 23, the Mounders held just a slim 2-1 lead but a pair of fourth-inning scores and four runs in the fifth frame lifted the hosts to a 8-1 win in the Dunn-St. Croix softball game.
Elk Mound, who out slugged Durand-Arkansaw 11 to 7, were led offensively by junior shortstop Ellie Schiszik, who finished the game 3-for-4 and scored twice, and freshman Kendra Garnett, who belted a pair of doubles and finished with three RBIs in four at bats. Junior Alivia Baskin also collected a pair of hits in her three plate appearances and had two RBIs in the game.
Baskin, Garnett, Elisabeth Beskow and Jaidynn Sarauer each stole a base.
Beskow started in the throwing circle for the Mounders and went six innings during which time she surrendered five hits for just a single run, walked a pair and struck out four to get the victory. Hailey Meyer finished the final inning and gave up two hits but no runs.
Elmwood-Plum City
Elk Mound got its bats going early when it visited Elmwood Thursday, April 25 for a conference game against the Wolves.
The Mounders scored six runs in their first at bat and ended up feasting on Elmwood-Plum City’s pitching for 13 hits en route to a 14-7 victory despite committing a season-high five fielding errors.
Leading 6-2, Elk Mound scored a pair in the third but Elmwood-Plum City closed its deficit to 8-6 with four runs in the bottom of the inning. The Mounders, however, sandwiched a four-run sixth between single-run innings in the fifth and seventh to secure the victory.
Ellie Schiszik went 3-for-5 in the game with an RBI and a run scored, Kendra Garnett had two hits including a double for an RBI and scored twice, Elisabeth Beskow finished with a pair of hits for three RBIs and scored a run, Alexis Joachim went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and scored and Jaidynn Sarauer picked up two hits including a double in three plate appearances and touched home three times.
Hailey Meyer secured the throwing victory. She scattered seven of the Wolves nine hits and allowed all seven of their runs and had eight Ks with no walks. Elisabeth Beskow threw the final two innings where she surrendered two hits and a run and struck out one.
Durand-Arkansaw-Game 2
Much like their game three days earlier, the Mounders and Panthers were locked in a close battle especially through the first four innings.
Elk Mound managed single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 advantage in the Thursday, April 25 contest played at Durand’s Tarrant Park Field.
The Mounders added four runs in the fourth. Durand-Arkansaw scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth as Elk Mound went on to sweep the regular-season series with the 6-1 victory.
Elk Mound collected 11 hits off Panther pitching with Hailey Meyer and Alexis Joachim getting two hits each while Kendra Garnett added a double in her four at bats. Schiszik, Beskow, Autumn Moquin, Alivia Baskin, Jaidynn Sarauer and Alexandria Solberg each had a hit.
Meyer threw a complete game for the victory as she allowed just one run on six hits and had nine strike outs and did not walk a Panther batter.
