Elk Mound baseball remains unbeaten with wins over Mondovi and Spring Valley

The Elk Mound baseball team picked up a pair of key conference victories last week including a win over defending Dunn-St. Croix champion Mondovi to remain unbeaten in league and season play.
The Mounders defeated Mondovi 8-1 on their home field at Village Park Monday, April 15 and then followed it up with a resounding 11-4 triumph at Spring Valley three days later to improve to 5-0 in conference competitions and 7-0 overall. Rain that fell throughout the day on Tuesday,
April 16 postponed the team’s other scheduled conference contest versus Boyceville.
Elk Mound looks to extend its unbeaten streak this week as it plays a trio of contests. The Mounders hosted Durand-Arkansaw Tuesday, then travel to Elmwood on Thursday for a game versus the E-PC Wolves and go to Ellsworth Friday for a non-conference contest. Elk Mound then returns to league play next Monday, April 29 in Boyceville.
Mondovi
The defending conference champion Buffaloes took a 1-0, first-inning advantage when they visited Elk Mound last Monday, April 15 for a key Dunn-St. Croix baseball showdown.
But, Elk Mound, who finished in second place a season ago, plated seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead for good.
After surrendering that first-inning run, senior Kaden Russo was masterful on the mound allowing just three Mondovi hits and that single run to help lift Elk Mound to an 8-1 victory. Russo struck out 13 Buffalo batters in six and two-thirds inning of work and allowed just a single walk as he earned the win. Kamron Diermeier pitched the final third of an inning and struck out one.
Elk Mound tacked on a single run in the sixth.
Russo also helped lead the Mounder offense which out hit the Buffaloes 11 to three. He finished with a 2-for-3 plate performance which included a double, finished with a stolen base and scored a run. Diermeier also had a pair of hits including a double in four at bats with a pair of RBIs along with a stolen base and a run scored. Jake Osborne also finished 2-for-4 for Elk Mound with an RBI and scored a run. Lucas Johnson double in one of his three plate appearances.
Keegan Catt had two of Mondovi’s three hits. Porter Bauer took the pitching loss as he started and went just two and a third inning to suffer the loss after surrendering six of the Mounder runs on four hits while walking three and striking out just two.
Spring Valley
Runs in the first two and final two innings allowed Elk Mound to claim a 11-4 Dunn-St. Croix win when it visited Spring Valley Thursday, April 18.
The Mounders scored three times in their first at bat in Spring Valley and added two more in the second to take an early 5-2 advantage over the Cardinals.
Elk Mound then tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth and capped it with four more in the seventh for the win. Spring Valley managed just single scores in the third and seventh frames.
For the second consecutive game, the Mounders also outhit their competition as they finished with a 13 to 8 advantage over the host Cardinals.
Kamron Diermeier and Brayden Borek led the Mounder hitters as each finished 3-for-4 in the game. Diermeier scored four runs and had a pair of RBIS while Borek doubled and touched home plate three times. Kaden Russo also doubled for the Mounders and finished with five RBIs in just three plate appearances with a pair of walks.
Peyton Vieth and Carter Vieth each finished with two stolen bases.
Diermeier also performed well on the mound as the junior earned the pitching win with four solid innings of work. He allowed just three runs on three hits, struck out half a dozen and allowed three base on bases. Victor Noller threw three innings and gave up just a single run on four hits with four Ks.
The game was also marked by errors with Spring Valley committing seven and Elk Mound four.
