The Elk Mound girls opened 2024 with a pair of decisive basketball victories.
The Mounders began the new year on the road last Tuesday going to Bloomer where they beat the Blackhawks by more than double, 67-32 in a non-conference contest.
Two days later, Elk Mound returned to its home court to host Spring Valley in a Dunn-St. Croix Conference game. The Mounder mauled the Red Birds 76-9 to stay unbeaten on the season.
Elk Mound, who improved to 5-0 in conference play and 13-0 overall, will face a pair of D-SC foes this week. The Mounders hosted winless Elmwood-Plum City yesterday (Tuesday, January 9) and will be at Glenwood City Friday. They will return home next Monday, January 15 for a non-conference game with Osseo-Fairchild.
Bloomer
Quick starts have been a hallmark of this year’s Lady Mounders squad, and their non-conference game at Bloomer Tuesday, January 2 was no different.
Elk Mound bolted to a 43-15 halftime advantage as Allie Robel scored all 17 of her game-leading points in the opening half. During that period, Ellie Schiszik and Lydia Levra also added seven points each and Carly Mohr tallied five.
In the second half, the Mounders put up 24 points with Levra adding five more points including a three to finish with a dozen points and Belle Kongshaug netted her second three of the contest to finish with nine points. Mohr and Schiszik also contributed nine points in the 67-32 victory.
“I was impressed with our offensive and defensive energy,” stated Jordan Kongshaug, Elk Mound head coach.
“We moved the ball extremely well all game,” he added.
Robel and Hailey Meyer each corralled seven rebounds to lead the Mounders who finished with 31. Chloe Dummer added five rebounds to compliment her five points while Mohr and Kongshaug added four boards each to their statistical tallies.
Elk Mound finished with 17 steals and 11 assists. Schiszik led the way with nine of those steals and had a pair of assists. Robel finished with four steals and an assist while Levra had three steals and three assists.
The Mounders were 10-for-14 at the free throw line and finished 5-18 from behind the three-point arc.
Brooke Petska topped the Blackhawk scorers with nine points and Dani Latz and Addy Zwiefelhofer chipped in with seven each.
Spring Valley
The Mounders gave a dominate performance on both ends of the court when it hosted Spring Valley in a conference contest January 4.
While all 14 of the Mounder varsity players contributed at least two points in the game, it was the Elk Mound defense that shined as it stymied the Spring Valley offense allowing the Cardinals just nine points in the game including a mere three in the first half of play.
“We were disciplined on the defensive end and took care of the basketball,” Coach Kongshaug said.
Elk Mound led from the opening tip to the final horn, turning a 44-3 halftime advantage into a 76-9 victory.
Ellie Schiszik topped all scorers with 16 points which included both of the Mounders three point baskets and had four steals. Chloe Dummer finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three steals. Carly Mohr added nine points. Allie Robel tallied seven points, four steals and two boards. Lydia Levra had five points along with a pair of rebounds and assists. Allie Roder registered five rebounds, five assists and five steals to go along with four points. Haily Meyer tacked six points on to the team total.
The Mounder were 8-for-13 at the charity stripe.
Kate Cipriano scored four points, Mara Ducklow and Rylie Fritz two each and Raeann Traynor had a free throw to account for all nine of the Cardinals’ points.
