COLFAX — The Elk Mound girls raised their overall record to 10-0 and 4-0 in Dunn-St. Croix Conference play with a 44-28 win over Colfax on the Vikings’ home court Thursday, December 21.

“We were very happy to get a hard fought win,” stated Jordan Kongshaug, Elk Mound head coach.

“Colfax is a very good team that plays great defense and is very disciplined. I was proud of our effort on the defensive end, and how we responded offensively in the second half,” he added. 

The Vikings are now 4-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play good for third place along with Spring Valley. Mondovi and Durand are both tied for second with 3-1 records in D-SC play.

Colfax had their one and only lead of the game when Jada Anderson scored off an in-bounds pass for an early 2-0 advantage. The Mounders went on a nine-point run however, starting with two shots in the paint by Carlie Mohr and a three-point shot and a deuce from Allie Robel.

Jordyn Bowe finally stopped the streak with a triple and Jeanette Hydukovich added a close range shot to go with a pair of McKenna Shipman free throws, but the Mounders responded with buckets by Allie Roder and Robel with Roder drilling a shot from long range for a 16-9 Mounder lead. 

McKenna Shipman scored four quick points for the Vikings on a shot from the lane and two more free tosses while Mohr tacked on a single free throw for the Mounders and it was 17-13 for Elk Mound at halftime.

The low scoring game indicated a lot of defense by both sides and there were almost as many jump balls called in the game as there were free throws.

In the second half, Lydia Levra started the Mounders off by draining a trey but that was quickly countered by Kaysen Goodell’s three pointer on a bank shot no less. Unfortunately for the Vikings, they sat on their 16 points for a long time after mis-firing on several

three-point attempts while turning the ball over a few times against the Mounders’ pressing defense. The Mounders took advantage, using a run of eight points on three shots in the paint by Ellie Schiszik and one by Mohr to make it 28-16.

Ms. Reliable, McKenna Shipman banged in two more free throws but Chloe Dummer connected on back-to-back shots, Roder scored on a drive through the lane and Robel added another shot in the lane to make it 34-18.

McKenna Shipman canned a long triple while Hydukovich scored twice, once on a drive through the lane and again on a fast break layup and a Brynn Sikora free toss in between put the score at 36-26 for the Mounders. 

The Vikings committed their seventh foul with 3:37 to play, sending the Mounders to the charity stripe six times where they made 8-of-9 shots to finish off the 44-28 win.

Robel led the Mounders with ten points and Schiszik, who averages 17 points a game, was held to nine points along with Roder. Elk Mound knocked down three shots from behind the arc and were 9-for-15 from the foul line.

McKenna Shipman was two points below her average with 11 points for the game while Hydukovich scored eight points. Colfax connected on three shots from long range and were 7-for-10 at the charity stripe.

Following the Christmas break, Elk Mound will play an afternoon game at Altoona this Thursday, December 28. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. The Mounders will also play at Bloomer on Tuesday, January 2.

Colfax has an extended holiday break and does not play again until January 2 when the Vikings travel to St. Croix Central.
