ELK MOUND — For the first time in many seasons, wrestling is once again an official sport at Elk Mound High School.
Several years ago, Elk Mound joined with Colfax to offer wrestling but after little interest, the cooperative was dissolved and Colfax went with Bloomer.
Elk Mound will once again be working with another school district to offer the sport. Elk Mound has formed a cooperative with Chippewa Falls McDonell Central and will compete in the Cloverbelt Conference.
Four Mounder athletes are a part of the team which is coached by McDonell’s Shane Giza. They are freshmen Jesse Baxter, Luca Burcaw and Brody Mathison, and sophomore Ford Hay.
According to Coach Giza, the cooperative holds its practices at 3D Fitness in downtown Chippewa Falls.
The squad opened the season at the Board Hyland Cardinal Invitational in Coon Rapids, MN this past Saturday. Hay (139 lbs.), Baxter (189 lbs.), and Mathison (215 lbs.) all finished the tournament with 0-2 records at their respective weights.
