Adding a pair of convincing non-conference wins to its tally last week, the Elk Mound girls’ basketball team saw its early season record improve to a perfect 5-0.
Hosting Baldwin-Woodville last Thursday, November 30, the Mounders were able to pull away from the Blackhawks in the second half to post a 51-39 victory. Two days later, Elk Mound made the short trek to Colfax where it battled Cadott in the annual Western Wisconsin Girls’ Basketball Classic that included most of the Dunn-St. Croix Conference teams and several Cloverbelt West Conference teams. The Mounders squashed the Hornets 69-19 as they allowed just four second-half points in the Saturday night, December 2 contest.
Elk Mound looks to continue its unbeaten streak when it opens Dunn-St. Croix play with a pair of road contests this week. The Mounders were in Mondovi Tuesday and head to Durand Thursday to face the Panthers of Durand-Arkansaw. St. Croix Central will come to Elk Mound next Monday, December 11 for a out-of-league game.
Baldwin-Woodville
Returning from the Thanksgiving break, Elk Mound welcomed Middle Border combatant Baldwin-Woodville to its gym November 30.
The Lady Mounders held a 27-22 lead at halftime as Allie Roder scored nine of her 12 points in the opening 18 minutes of action. Ellie Schiszik added eight in that span including a pair of triples, Carly Mohr hit two deuces for her only points of the game, Lydia Levra made 3-of-4 foul shots and Belle Kongshaug came off the bench to hit a three.
In the second half, Elk Mound was able to pull away for the double-digits victory as it outscored Baldwin-Woodville 24-17.
Levra sank a pair of treys and two deuces in that final stanza and Schiszik netted a two-point hoop and three free tosses as the pair finished with 13 points each to pace the home team. Allie Robel, who went scoreless in the opening half, finished with six points.
“After getting off to a slow start, I thought the girls responded well,” stated Jordan Kongshaug, Elk Mound head coach. “As the game went on, our energy level went up, and this allowed us to make defensive plays and score in transition.”
The top rebounders for Elk Mound were Mohr with four and Levra, Roder and Schiszik with three each.
The Mounders finished 18-for-37 shooting which included a 7-for-14 performance from behind the three-point arc and made eight of their 13 free throws.

Baldwin-Woodville was led in scoring by Maggie Jensen and Marin Nygaard with 13 and eight points, respectively. The Blackhawks were also 8-for-13 at the charity stripe but just 1-of-6 from behind the arc.
Cadott
Facing Cadott in a Saturday evening contest in the annual Western Wisconsin Girls’ Basketball Classic, which was held at Colfax High School, Elk Mound dominated the game from start to finish.
Using a high-octane offense in the first half, the Mounders rolled to a 41-19 halftime lead.
While its offensive scoring waned a bit in the second half, Elk Mound applied a lock-down defense that limited Cadott to just four points in the final 18 minutes of action. The Mounders added 28 points to their score in that span as they cruised to a 69-19 win over the Hornets.
Junior Ellie Schiszik sizzled on the offensive end as she sunk all five of the Mounders’ three pointers and added seven deuces to finish with a game-leading 29 points. She also added four assists and had five steals. Carly Mohr was the only other Mounder to score double digits as she tallied ten and led the squad in rebounds with nine. Allie Robel added eight points and five rebound and five steals. Chloe Dummer and Hailey Meyer each finished with six points with Meyer chipping in for six boards. Senior Lydia Levra, who had two points, also collected six rebounds and finished with a team-high eight assists.
Kasey Moldrem led Cadott with eight points including two of the Hornets four triples.
Neither team shot particularly well at the free throw line. Elk Mound went 6-for-11 and Cadott, who had just four attempts, made only one.
