FALL CREEK — The Elk Mound girls’ basketball team remained unbeaten in the early season as it improved 3-0 with a close 50 to 47 road victory over the Fall Creek Crickets November 21.
The Mounders had to overcome some adversity to earn the win including foul trouble and a lack luster performance at the free throw line.
Carly Mohr fouled out of the game in the second half after scoring just two points, Allie Robel finished with four fouls and Ellie Schiszik and Allie Roder were each whistled for three infractions.
As a team, Elk Mound made just 11 of its 21 foul shots for a mundane 52 percent.
“Our team was able to overcome some adversity and rally to get a hard fought win. Fall Creek is a very good team, and we feel good going into Thanksgiving,” stated Elk Mound head coach Jordan Kongshaug.
The game was knotted at 18 at halftime.
In the opening 18 minutes of action, Schiszik accounted for six of Elk Mound’s 18 points including a pair of hoops and a 2-for-4 effort at the line. Chloe Dummer and Allie Robel each scored three points on a field goal and a free toss and Allie Roder, Lydia Levra and Carly Mohr each made a two-point hoop.
Schiszik and Roder heated up in the second half as they helped Elk Mound rally past Fall Creek 32 to 29 for the 3-point victory. Schiszik hit eight, two-point field goals and her only free throw attempt as she scored 17 of her game high 23 points in the final half. Roder added nine in that same period including the Mounders only three-point bucket of the game to finish with 11 points. Robel and Levra each scored five, Dummer added four and Mohr two to account for all the Mounders’ scores.
Jasmin Heuer led the Crickets’ scoring with 15 points with Kimbel Sell adding 11.
Elk Mound pulled down 28 rebounds against Fall Creek as Robel and Roder each secured seven, Schiszik added five, Mohr four and Hailey Meyer finished with three boards. Robel also had a pair of assists and Levra, Dummer and Meyer each came up with a two steals each.
The girls will host Baldwin-Woodville in a non-conference contest Thursday and then go to Colfax Saturday, December 2 to play in the Dunn-St. Croix-Cloverbelt Challenge against Cadott at 5:15 p.m. Next Tuesday, December 5, Elk Mound opens Dunn-St. Croix Conference play in Mondovi.
