The Elk Mound volleyball team finished its 2023 season by splitting a pair of regional matches last week.
The Mounder netters, seeded sixth in the lower half of the Barron Sectional, opened WIAA Division 3 regional competition on their home court last Tuesday, October 17 where they defeated number 11 Stanley-Boyd for the second time this year. The Mounders prevailed 3-1 in that latest contest. The victory gave Elk Mound a road date with number three seed Cadott two days later. The two teams split the opening two sets but the host Hornets took charge and won sets three and four to take a the 3-1 victory in the October 19 match.
With those final two outcomes recorded, Elk Mound finished this season with a 13-21 overall record. The Mounders were 5-2 in Dunn-St. Croix play, good for a second-place tie with rival Colfax.
Elk Mound was one of four conference schools to take on Cloverbelt squads in the regional semifinals. The Dunn-St. Croix fell in all four matches. Conference champ Spring Valley lost to Regis, Colfax came up short against top-seeded Chippewa Falls McDonell and Durand-Arkansaw fell to Fall Creek, all in straight sets. The Elk Mound-Cadott match was the only one to go beyond three sets.
The loss at Cadott also marked the final Mounders’ volleyball match for seniors Trinia Nelson, Lydia Levra, Andrea Rosenthal and Addison Dean. Elk Mound will return several underclassmen with varsity experience including sophomore all-conference performers Taylor Frinack and Miley Carlton.

Stanley-Boyd
After beating Stanley-Boyd three sets to two back on September 5, the Mounders’ volleyball squad was looking for a second straight win over the Orioles when the two squads met October 17 in the Division 3 regional opener in Elk Mound.
Elk Mound did just that as they defeated Stanley-Boyd in four sets.
The Mounders lost the opening set 16-25 to the Orioles but rebounded to win the next three sets and match by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-11.
No team or individual statistics for Elk Mound were reported for this match.
Cadott
The first two sets were a back-and-forth battle when Elk Mound played at Cadott in the Thursday, October 19 regional semifinal.
The Hornets earned a 25-20 win over the Mounders in the opening.
Cadott took an early 6-2 advantage in the second set but a strong serve game by sophomore Loftyn Awe coupled with solid net play and sets allowed Elk Mound to surge ahead 16-7. The Mounders held off a late Hornet rally for a 25-21 win that tied the match at a set apiece.
Cadott once again jumped out to the early lead in the third set, but this time they were able to hold that lead and eventually claimed a 25-11 win.
The Hornets then closed out the Mounders season and match with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.
