LA CROSSE — Sophomore speedster Keinin Miller finished seventh in Saturday afternoon’s Division 2, 200 meter final to provide the Elk Mound boys with their only two points of the 2023 WIAA State Track and Field Championships which were held last Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3 at Veterans Memorial Field Complex on the UW-La Crosse campus.
The two-day competition was marked by 90 degree plus, energy-sapping temperatures and a nearly four-hour severe weather delay on Friday afternoon.
Miller, who qualified fifth with a run of :22.50 in Friday’s preliminaries, improved his time in Saturday’s final but so did several of his competitors. Despite crossing the finish line in a time of :22.39, Miller slipped to seventh in the final standings and just missed the podium. The top six place finishers were awarded medals and recognized on the infield podium while the top eight in each event scored team points.
La Crosse Aquinas senior Collin Conzemius won the 200 meter gold with a run of :21.39, a full second faster than Miller.
The sophomore also competed in the 100 meters. Miller finished Friday’s preliminary with a time of :11.46 which put him in 12th place, just missing the final’s cut which took the runners with the ten fastest times.
Miller was also part of the Mounder boys’ 4×100 meter relay team which also included seniors Carson Streifel, AJ Miller and Alex Woodford. The foursome finished in

14th place in Friday’s preliminaries with a time of :44.38 and did not qualify to run in Saturday’s final.
Mounder junior Grandt Mueller competed in a trio of individual events at last weekend’s state meet.
The jump specialist just missed scoring some more team points. Competing Friday in the long jump and high jump, Mueller jumped a best of 20’ 4.5” to finish ninth in the long jump and placed tenth in the high jump with a clearance of six feet even. A pair of seniors won those respective events with Waupun’s Jacob Abel taking long jump gold with a leap of 24’ 3.25” and Tommy Huff of Westfield Area/Montello won the high jump after clearing six feet eight inches.
Saturday saw Mueller take to the runway and sand pits at Veterans Memorial Field Complex to compete in the Division 2 triple jump. His third jump produced a distance of 41’ 6.75” to finish in 11th place, less than two inches from qualifying for three more jumps in the finals. Lodi junior Gavin Sargeant won the event with a jump of 45’ 10.5”.
The two team points that Miller scored in the 200 meters placed Elk Mound in 48th place in the final Division 2 boy’s team standings.
Lakeside Lutheran was the Division 2 boys champion with 45 points. Shorewood was the state D2 runner-up with 43 points. In the girls’ Division 2 competition, Osceola scored 50 points to win the state championship, Rice Lake came in second with 43 points.
