DURAND — A week after claiming the Dunn-St. Croix championship on the very same field of competition, the Elk Mound boys’ track and field team returned to Bauer Built Sports Complex in Durand Monday, May 22 and won the WIAA Division 2 regional meet.
The Mounder boys copped five wins including a pair of first-place finishes by sophomore Keinin Miller to claim the regional crown with 128 points, beating runner-up and Middle Border member Somerset by 16 points.
The boys had half a dozen individuals and a pair of relays qualify for the sectional meet which was held Thursday, May 25 in Arcadia.
The Lady Mounders also performed well scoring 73 points on their way to a fourth-place showing in Durand. The girls had five individuals and two relays earn sectional berths. Prescott won the girls’ team championship with 143 points. Nine schools competed in the regional competition.
The top four place finishers in each event at the Durand-Arkansaw regional advanced to the sectional meet while the top eight places earned points.
Sophomore sprinter Keinin Miller sped to wins in the 100 and 200 meter dashes with respective times of :11.33 and :22.61.
Versatile junior Grandt Mueller jumped and hurdled his way to sectional berths in four separate events. Mueller won the triple jump with a leap of 40’ 10.5” and placed second in the high jump (5’ 10”) and the long jump (20’ 11”). He grabbed his final sectional spot in the 110 meter high hurdles where he ran a :16.41 to take fourth.
The boys’ 4×100 m relay team, which consisted of seniors AJ Miller and Alex Woodford along with junior Carson Streifel and Keinin Miller, won its race in :44.09.
Senior Aidan Schiferl had the Mounder boys other first-place finish. Schiferl ran a 10:13.23 to win the gold medal in the 3,200 m run. He also scored points with a seventh-place finish in the 1,600 meter run.
Also scoring points in a pair of events were senior Tobey Westcott, junior Carson Streifel and sophomore Brooks Burcaw.
Streifel qualified for sectionals in the 200 meters with a third-place run of :23.44 and ran a :11.60 to place fifth in the 100 meters.
Wescott just missed the sectional cut in the pole vault were he tied for fifth with a vault of nine feet. He also placed eighth in the 300 m intermediate hurdles.
Burcaw placed in both hurdling events. He was fifth in the 300 m intermediates and seventh in the 110 m highs.
Sectional berths went to seniors Ian Hazen and Lucas Hanson and the 4×400 meter relay squad. Hazen placed second in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 4:31.51. Hanson ran a :53.91 to place third in the 400 m and the 4×400 m relay also scored a bronze-medal finish.
Just missing section berths by taking fifth were sophomore Landon Kasakaitas in the shot put as well as the boys’ 4×200 and 4×800 meter relays.
Senior Kate Mohr earned the Mounder girls only regional title in Durand as she topped the field in the 300 m low hurdles with a time of :51.46. She also scored thirds and sectional berths in the 100 m high hurdles (:16.93) and high jump (five feet).
The girls 4×100 and 4×400 meter relays, which both consisted of senior Aleya Hadenfeldt, junior Lydia Levra and freshmen Taylor Frinack and Allie Robel, each copped second place. The other two relays – 4×200 and 4×800 – each finished in eighth place.
Aleya Hadenfeldt took an individual second in the 100 meters following a run of :13.15.
Third-place finishes and sectional berths went to Lydia Levra in the 400 m (1:01.02) and Allie Robel in the 100 m (:27.37).
Sophomore Savannah Nechanicky placed sixth in the 400 meters while Marley King finished sixth in the 1,600 meters.
Like elder sister Kate, junior Carly Mohr scored points in both hurdle events taking sixth in the 300 m lows and seventh in the 100 m highs.
Taylor Frinack finished seventh in the 100 meters.
