AMERY — The Glenwood City track and field records continued to be rewritten.
Just three days after Hilltoppers’ senior JJ Williams established a new school record in the 800 for the third time in the past two seasons, junior Haylie Hannah broke her own school record in the pole vault when she soared over the cross bar which was set at ten feet three inches during the Amery Track and Field Invitational held last Tuesday, May 2.
Hannah’s record-setting jump earned her a second-place finish in the event behind winner Kelly Fern of Amery who went 11’ 1”, and as it turned out, gave the Glenwood City girls their only eight points of the meet which placed the Toppers 16th out of the 18 team’s that scored in the meet.
Meanwhile, the Glenwood City boys fortunates at Amery were largely carried by its upperclassmen (six seniors and a junior) and its four relay teams which accounted for 50 of the teams 58.33 points. A tally that slotted the team fifth out of the 17 boys’ teams that finished with a score.
Senior Wyatt Thompson copped the Toppers only first-place showing in Amery when he took top honors in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:09.01. Running more of a warm-up race, fellow senior JJ Williams, who normally dominates the 800, finished seventh in 2:13.21.
Freshman Clayton Hoffman continued his an impressive first-year of varsity competition by placing second in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:48.36.
Three other seniors – Owen Bauman, Brady Klatt and Blake Wakeling – each scored a fourth-place finish. Bauman cleared 5’ 8” in the high jump, Klatt sent the discus 141 feet even and Wakeling went 12 feet in the pole vault. Wakeling also scored a team point by taking eighth in the high jump (5’ 6”).
Yet another one of those Topper seniors, Nick Hierlmeier, set another personal record in the shot put with a heave of 43’ 6.75” which was good for sixth. Junior teammate Conner Gross was right on Hierlmeier’s heels with a shot put of 42’ 0.5” to finish in seventh place.
Osceola won both the girls’ (197) and boys’ (130) competitions.
The Hilltoppers are slated to compete in a pair of meets this week. They were in Colfax Tuesday and at Boyceville Thursday. The Dunn-St. Croix Conference championship will be held next Tuesday, May 16 at Bauer Built Sports Complex in Durand.
