Mother Nature continued to wreck havoc on the high school golf schedule.
The Hilltoppers along with the other four Dunn-St. Croix schools that sponsor boys’ golf programs were able to get in a pair of nine-hole conference meets early last week only to have a heavy rain hit Durand last Friday causing the postponement of a third planned meet.
In the two conference meets that were played, Glenwood City stumbled in the Monday, May 1 event hosted by Durand at Rolling Greens Golf Course. After four consecutive second-place finishes, the Hilltoppers shot over 200 for the first-time this season, taking a 201 to place fourth. Glenwood City, however, worked out the kinks quickly as they turned around and tied Durand for first place the following day in a D-SC competition held at the Valley Golf Course in Mondovi. Both teams shot a 185.
With the 18-hole conference tournament slated for next Monday, May 15 at the Whitetail Golf Course near Colfax, Glenwood City has three final D-SC meets set for this week. The Toppers competed at Whitetail on Monday and were in Mondovi Tuesday. Spring Valley will host the final nine-hole meet this Thursday. No make-up date for the May 5 Durand postponement had been set prior to Tuesday’s morning’s press deadline.
Durand
The May 1 conference golf competition at the Rolling Greens Golf Course in Durand turned out to be one the Hilltoppers would like to quickly put in the rear view mirror.
Glenwood City struggled throughout the meet finishing fourth among the five competing schools with 201 strokes.
Durand extended its league lead by placing first on its home course after shooting a 183. Spring Valley, who had placed fourth in the previous four D-SC competitions, jumped up to second place at Durand after carding a team score of 193. Colfax-Elk Mound placed third with a 194 and Mondovi came in last with a 216.
Glenwood City did have a pair of golfers finish in the top ten. Sophomore Charles Lamb was Glenwood City’s top finisher with a 46 which was good for fifth place on the individual leader board. Senior Ian Radintz finished in a five-way tie for seventh place with a 48. The other three varsity golfers shot over 50 on the day. Esdyn Swenby had a 52 and Ben Wittmer and Gabe Knops each tallied 55s.
The Hilltoppers junior varsity team also struggled, finishing in third with a 236. Landon Obermueller shot a 50, Jared Hager had a 57, Kaylin Brandt finished with a 63 and Cole Wakeling and Evelyn Radintz each carded a 66.
