Glenwood City baseball beats Durand-Arkansaw, battered by Mondovi Buffaloes

GLENWOOD CITY — Although the field grass is still a bit sparse, the Hilltoppers were finally able to play on their new baseball field last week as it hosted a pair of Dunn-St. Croix games.
Glenwood City first official contest on the newly renovated field came against the Durand-Arkansaw Panthers Monday, May 1. And the Toppers had plenty to celebrate as they christened the new diamond with a 13-9 win.
Unfortunately, Glenwood City was unable to make its home-field advantage pay dividends the following day when second-place Mondovi came calling. The Buffaloes racked up 23 hits in the May 2 game en route to pummeling the Hilltoppers 25-4.
Glenwood City, 3-6 in conference and overall, hosted Elk Mound this past Monday with Spring Valley coming to town this Thursday. The Toppers play the Bulldogs next Monday, May 15.
Durand-Arkansaw
When the Panthers and Hilltoppers came together last Monday, May 1 to inaugurate Glenwood City’s new baseball facility, fans were treated to a high scoring affair that featured 22 runs and 24 hits, a dozen by each side.
The first game to be played on the new field resulted in a 13-9 Hilltopper win.
The teams scored in every inning but the third.
After the Panthers took a 1-0 lead after a half inning of play, the Hilltoppers responded with four scores in the bottom of the inning. Durand tied the game at four all with three runs in the top of the second only to see Glenwood City reestablish a 6-4 lead with a pair of second-inning scores.
Both teams added two runs in their halves of the fourth which made the scored 8 to 6 in Glenwood City’s favor.
While the Panthers added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, Glenwood City scored three times in the fifth and twice more in the sixth for the eventual four-run win.
Both teams finished with 12 hits. Glenwood City also committed a trio of errors while Durand-Arkansaw had two.
Steven Booth had a good game finishing 3-for-4 batting including a double, three RBIS and a trio of runs. Booth also earned the pitching win as he went three innings, surrendering six runs on five hits with six walks and five strikeouts. Blake Fayerweather threw four innings as he gave up three runs on seven his, walked three and had a strikeout.
Peyton Theune had two hits one of which went for a double and finished with four RBIs. Noah Brite and Jayden Quinn both doubled and had a pair of hits and scored two runs.
Mondovi
The Buffaloes scored multiple runs in all five innings as they stampeded the Hilltoppers 25-4 in Glenwood City Tuesday, May2.
Mondovi scored three runs in the first inning, six in he second, eight runs in the third and four runs each in the fourth and fifth frames to take a commanding 25-0 lead as it racked up 23 hits.
The Toppers were finally able to put four runs on the score board in what was its final at bat in the bottom of the fifth.
Max Janson doubled and Jayden Quinn and Noah Brite each singled to account for the Toppers three hits.
Janson took the throwing loss as he threw the first two innings and gave up nine runs on ten hits with two walks. Theune, Brite and Caleb Klinger also pitched.
