With Mother Nature finally cooperating and delivering clear skies and warm temperatures, many area high school sporting teams were able to play several games outdoors last week.
Including Elk Mound who went 2-1 in their first week of competitive baseball. The Mounders had to travel to Arcadia last Monday, April 10 for what proved to be the season opener with the host Raiders prevailing 9-4 in the non-conference game. The following day Elk Mound returned home to Village Park for its home and conference opener versus Boyceville which saw the Mounders best the Bulldogs 14-2 in five innings. The Mounders closed out the week with a 7-0 shut out of Glenwood City in a Friday, April 14 game played at home.
Elk Mound (2-0, 2-1) had another full slate of games this week. The Mounders were supposed to play in Colfax Monday (but it was postponed due to the weather), at home versus Bloomer on Tuesday, in Mondovi this Thursday and then host Spring Valley next Monday, April 24.
Arcadia
Elk Mound found itself trailing 4-0 after only two innings of play in its season opener in Arcadia last Monday, April 10.
The Mounders were able to generate some offense in the top of the third scoring a trio of runs to pull within a run of the Raiders.
Unfortunately, Arcadia plated four runs in the bottom half of the inning and another in the fourth to go ahead 9-3.
The Mounders scored a run in the top of the sixth but couldn’t get any closer, losing 9-4.
Elk Mound managed just five hits in the contest with Kaden Russo picking up two of those hits in three plate appearances. Carter Vieth had a double and Carter Garnett and Jerome Delikowski each had a single to account for the Mounders other hits.
Brayden Borek started for Elk Mound and went three and a third innings to suffer the loss. He surrendered four of the Raiders five hits, five runs (all earned) and walked three without any strikeouts. Lucas Johnson and Carter Garnett each threw an inning with Johnson allowing three runs on one hit and a walk with a strikeout. Kamron Diermeier threw two-thirds of a frame and although he did not give up a hit and struck out one, the Raiders scored a run on him thanks in part to three base-on-balls.
Elk Mound also committed a pair of errors.
