It looked as though the Glenwood City girls’ basketball team might be on course to log their second win of the season when they hosted Augusta in a non-conference game on Valentine’s Day.
Glenwood City was feeling some love from its offense as it enjoyed one of its best halves of offense this season, taking a 26-26 tie into intermission. But, the Beavers gave the Hilltoppers the cold shoulder in the second half as Glenwood City managed just 15 points in the final stanza to lose 63-41.
Two days later, Glenwood City was in Colfax to close out its conference and regular season schedule. The Vikings opened on a 26-point run, led 46-7 at halftime and won the February 16 contest, 66-19.
With those two loses, the Hilltoppers finished 0-14 in the Dunn-St. Croix and closed the books on a 1-23 regular season.
While Tuesday’s playoff game offered Glenwood City an opportunity to whip the slate clean and start over, the Hilltoppers knew it would be difficult challenge as they faced state-ranked and second-seeded Chippewa Falls McDonell Central in the Division 5 quarterfinals February 21.
Augusta
Sophomore post player Izzy Davis had a monster first half scoring 13 points to put her Hilltoppers in a 26-26 halftime tie when Augusta visited Glenwood City last Tuesday, February 14.
Junior point guard Libby Wagner chipped in with six points while Michaela Blaser added five points during an inspired first-half effort from the Hilltoppers.
Unfortunately, Glenwood City cooled off during the halftime break while Augusta heated up once the second half began.
The Toppers netted just six deuces and three free tosses in the second-half of action and were out gunned 37 to 15 by the Beavers who pulled away to take the 63-41 win.
Davis scored just three point in the second half to finish with team-high 16 points. Kylie Ohman, Emma Bliese, Mali Draxler, Libby Wagner Michaela Blaser, who added a pair of free tosses, each scored a basket in the final stanza. Blaser finished with nine points and Wagner eight. Glenwood City was 7-for-11 at the line and did not convert a three-point attempt.

Conversely, Augusta sank half a dozen threes including three by Kennedy Korger who led all scorers with 27 points including 15 after the halftime break. Two other teammates joined Korger as double digits scorers – Sam Winsce hit a pair of triples to finish with 13 points while post player Brittany Bergman scored ten including a 6-for-8 effort at the line where the Beavers finished 13-for-23.
Colfax
Their second and final meeting of the season played out much like the first. Colfax opened with a splurge of points, took a large advantage into halftime and then coasted to a comfortable margin of victory, beating Glenwood City 66-19 in the February 17 regular season and conference finale.
The Vikings scored the first 26 points of the game as Glenwood wilted under Colfax’s full-court pressure and turned the ball over several times while getting off a shot attempt. It wasn’t until the 10:49 mark of the first half that junior Michaela Blaser converted a pair of foul shots to put the Hilltoppers on the scoreboard.
Colfax would extend its lead to 34-2 with an 8-0 run before Libby Wagner hit a triple to make it 34-5. Wagner added a pair of free throws but Colfax led 46-7 at the break.
Although Colfax slowed its offensive tempo and dialed back its offensive pressure in the second half, the Vikings still outscored the Hilltoppers 20 to 12 to take the 66-19 win.
Colfax finished with five triples in the game by four different players and were 5-for-9 at the foul stripe. Aynsley Olson led the team with 16 points with Kaysen Goodell tacking on 12, Jeanette Hydukovich 10 and McKenna Shipman eight.
Izzy Davis, who had two of Glenwood City’s four second-half hoops, finished with six points to lead the Hilltoppers as the team drained one trey and were 6-for-6 at the foul line. Wagner also tallied five points for GC, all of which came in the first half.
