Elk Mound girls defeat Spring Valley and Elmwood/Plum City to remain unbeaten

The Elk Mound girls have demonstrated a potent offensive attack this season, particularly in the first half of contests as they aptly showed in home and away conference basketball victories last week.
The Lady Mounders caged the Cardinals of Spring Valley 65-21 in a Tuesday, January 10 home-court contest and then went on the road to Plum City and thoroughly dominated the Wolves of Elmwood/Plum City 68-19 in the Friday, January 13 contest.
With those two wins, Elk Mound improved to 7-0 in the Dunn-St. Croix and 13-0 in all games this season.
But, despite the unblemished record, the Lady Mounders are still not receiving any love from state pollsters as they remained unranked in Division 3.
Elk Mound will have plenty of opportunities to showcase its talents again this week as it plays in three home contest, two of which are against non-conference foes. Elk Mound welcomed Stanley-Boyd this past Monday night, host Glenwood City Thursday, January 19 and tip off against a 10-3 Somerset squad on Saturday, January 21. The following Tuesday, January 24, the Mounders begin a three-game road swing in Mondovi.
Spring Valley
As it has in so many games this season, Elk Mound jumped out to a large and healthy lead when it hosted Spring Valley in a conference contest January 10.
Mounder sophomore Ellie Schiszik hit a pair of threes and two deuces and made all four of her throws as she scored all 14 of her game-high points in the first half of play. Brooke Emery also added two triples and Lydia Levra another in the first half as Elk Mound shot to a 45-14 halftime advantage.
While the offense took its foot of the accelerator just a bit in the second half, scoring just 20 points, the Elk Mound defense remained stifling as it held the visiting Cardinals to just seven points over the final 18 minutes of action to win 65-21.
“I thought we came out with a lot of energy,” note Mounders head coach Jordan Kongshaug. “We were able to generate turnovers and score in transition.”
Besides Schiszik, Stella Rhude and Levra both scored in the double digits for Elk Mound who had nine players finish with points. Rhude tallied a trio of two-point hoops in each half to finish with a dozen and Levra netted nine of her 11 points in the opening half. Carly Mohr finished with seven and Brooke Emery and Tori Blaskowski had six points each.
Elk Mound finished 12-for-20 at the free throw line while Spring Valley made just six of its 15 free tosses. The Cardinals also had four triples.
Elmwood/Plum City
As it had done at home three days early, Elk Mound scored a plethora of first-half points when it took on the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves in Plum City last Friday, January 13.
The Mounders put 44 points on the scoreboard in the opening 18 minutes of action compared to just a dozen by their hosts.
That dominate play continued into the second half where Elk Mound once again outpointed Elmwood/Plum City 24 to 7 to take a convincing 68-19 victory and remain unbeaten in the 2022-23 campaign.
Ten Mounders put points in the scorebook led by 12 points from Ellie Schiszik. Three players – Carly Mohr, Tori Blaskowski and Chloe Dummer – added 11 points apiece. Stella Rhude finished with eight.
While field goal numbers were not made available for the game, Elk Mound did finish 12-for-20 at the charity stripe.
No team or individual statistics were provided for Elmwood/Plum City.
