BALDWIN — Elk Mound had ten individuals – six boys and four girls – and five relays qualify for sectional competition following the conclusion of the 2022 WIAA Division 2 regional meet held at Baldwin-Woodville High School Monday, May 23.
The Mounder boys finished in third place with 89 points as all four of its relays advanced with the 4x800m squad taking gold. The Elk Mound girls placed sixth with 56 points. The top four place finishers in each event at Baldwin-Woodville advanced to the sectional meet which was held Thursday, May 26 in Rice Lake while the top eight places earned points.
Prescott won both the boys’ and girls’ team titles at the nine-team B-W regional.
The Elk Mound boys only win last Monday at Baldwin came in the first running event of the day as they copped first place in the 4x800m relay. The team of Cason Pederson, Trae Schaefer, Ian Hazen and Aiden Schiferl won in a time of 8:26.82 nearly four seconds faster than the runner-up team from Bloomer.
Earning second place finishes were junior Ian Hazen with a run of 4:48.07 in the 1,600 meters, freshman Grandt Mueller in the high jump with a height of 5’ 10” and junior Aiden Schiferl in the 3,200 meter run. Schiferl lost out on the gold medal by a mere one-hundredth of a second after running a 10:27.69 while the winner, Prescott’s Tyler Loucks, finished in 10:27.68.
The Mounder boys also had a trio of bronze-medal finishes. Senior Korbin Verdon ran a :23.94 to place third in the 200 meter dash, junior Trae Schaefer claimed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:10.12, and Grandt Mueller completed the 110 meter high hurdles in :17.35.
Taking fourth and qualifying for the sectional meet were Korbin Verdon in the 100 meter dash along with the boys’ 4×100, 4×200 and 4x400m relay teams.
Sophomore Tyler Gagner just missed advancing after finishing fifth in the 400 meter.
Taking sixth were Verdon in the high jump and freshman Brooks Burcaw in the 110m and 300m hurdles. Junior Tobey Westcott copped a seventh place in the pole vault and sophomore Gavin Sundeen and Westcott finished eighth in the discus and 110m high hurdles, respectively.
Junior Aleya Hadenfeldt won Elk Mound’s only individual regional title at Baldwin-Woodville sprinting to first place in the 100 meters with a time of :13.31 after qualifying in third place during the preliminaries.
Aleya Hadenfeldt also earned another gold medal as part of the Lady Mounders’ first-place 4x100m relay team. She was joined by Anna Roder, Lydia Levra and Allie Roder to post the top time of :52.80.
Sophomore Lydia Levra ran a 1:02.59 in the 400 meters to place second.
Junior hurdler Kate Mohr placed third in the 100m highs while sophomore Marley King claimed the girls’ final sectional berth by placing fourth in the 800 meter run.
The ladies 4x800m relay took fifth as did senior Olivia Schreiber in the triple jump. Kate Mohr added a sixth-place finish in the high jump and the 4x400m relay also placed sixth.
Freshman Allie Roder finished seventh in the 200 meter dash and her older sister, senior Anna Roder, took eighth in the 100 meters.
