GC girls trampled by Mounders, mauled by Wolves

A young Lady Hilltoppers’ basketball squad is beginning to show signs of improvement despite what two more losses this past week and their winless record might say.
After losing by 62-points eight days earlier in Elk Mound, Glenwood City put together a solid second-half of play when it hosted the second-place Mounders last Tuesday, January 25 even though the game ended in a 58-31 loss.
But, three days later in Elmwood, the Hilltoppers struggled to put the ball through the hoop and lost 68-24 to the Wolves.
Glenwood City (0-10, 0-18) hosts Spring Valley this Thursday in its only contest of the week. The Toppers will travel to Mondovi next Tuesday, February 8.
Elk Mound
Using a full-court press to create turnovers, the Mounders jumped to a 0-18 advantage when they visited Glenwood City January 25.
It wasn’t until senior Kendall Schutz scored on a fast-break layup with just over ten minutes left in the first half that Glenwood City had its first points.
Freshman Kaylynn Kurtz added a pair of hoops including a three pointer and two free throws as Glenwood City entered intermission trailing 33-11.
The Toppers offense faired much better in the second half after the Mounders pulled their defense back to half court.
The Toppers other freshman post player, Izzy Davis, scored nine points in the second half after being held scoreless in the first half.
Kurtz added five points in the latter half as she finished with a dozen points to lead Glenwood City.
Elk Mound still outpointed Glenwood City, 25-20, in the final 18 minutes to take the 58-31 win.
The Mounders hit nine of their 14 free throw attempts while Glenwood City struggled from the charity stripe finishing just 8-for-23.
Elmwood/Plum City
The ability to make field goals and free throws was the difference in the January 28 D-SC game played in Elmwood between Glenwood City and Elmwood/Plum City.
The Wolves, who led 34-14 at halftime and went on to score another 34 points in the second half, made 23 field goals to the Hilltoppers’ four.
While both teams attempted 33 fouls shots, Elmwood/Plum City connected on 21 with Glenwood City seeing just 12 of its freebies make it through the net.
That disparity easily accounted for the Wolves’ dominance in their 68-24 win which was highlighted by 24 points from Maggie Glaus.
All four of Glenwood City’s baskets were turned in by Aria DeSmith who hit a two and three-point shot in both halves to finish with ten points to led the Toppers offense. Michaela Blaser finished with five, Morgan Blaser and Jenna McCarthy had four and three points, respectively, all from free throws.
