MENOMONIE — What a spring it has been for UW-Stout and Boyceville High School graduate James Palmer.
After setting a single-season strike out record for the Blue Devils and registered their first, complete game no-hitter, Palmer has been selected to a pair of all-region teams.
Palmer was selected to the 2021 D3baseball.com All-Midwest Region and ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-Region teams. The left-handed pitcher was named as a second team member of the D3baseball.com All-Midwest Region squad and was a third-team selection to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA D3 Midwest All-Region team.
Palmer posted a 7-3 overall record and threw two shutouts, combined with the bullpen in two other shutouts and threw the school’s first nine-inning no-hitter, striking out nine in an 8-0 win over UW-Platteville, May 4.
Palmer set a school record for most strikeouts in a single season with 76, finished with an ERA of 1.83, throwing 68.2 innings while starting 10 games.
Palmer held his opponents to a batting average of .180. Throughout the season, Palmer recorded ten or more strikeouts three times, recording 11 against UW-Eau Claire, April 9 in five innings, 11 against Finlandia in six innings, May 15, and 10 against Eau Claire, March 27. Palmer twice recorded nine strikeouts in a single game and, in 239 at-bats, allowed only 13 extra-base hits, with no home runs allowed.
A pair of teammates also joined Palmer on the D3baseball.com All-Midwest Region squads – first baseman Kasey Bass, a senior from Sun Prairie, was tabbed as a first team selection and right fielder Hunter Merrill, a senior form Ripon, was chosen to the third team.
The Blue Devils finished the season at 23-19 overall, 16-12 in the WIAC and advanced to the semi-final round of the WIAC Baseball Championship.
