AMERY — The golf season will last at least one more week for Glenwood City.
The Hilltoppers finished fourth in the WIAA Division 3 Clear Lake Regional held Tuesday, June 1 at the Amery Golf Course to qualify for today’s (June 9) sectional tournament in Frederic.
Glenwood City finished with 400 strokes in the 18-hole tournament to place right in the middle of the seven-team meet with the top four teams earning a spot in the sectional field along with the first four individuals not on a qualifying squad.
Dunn-St. Croix champion Durand easily won the regional crown with a 344, 41 strokes better than second-place team finishers Eleva-Strum and Fall Creek who tied with a 385. Glenwood City took fourth after finishing five strokes ahead of Cadott while Osseo-Fairchild (414) and Mondovi (446) came in sixth and seventh.
Owen Swenby had a fantastic round of golf in Amery last Tuesday to lead the Toppers’ charge toward sectional play. Under bright and warm skies, the junior shot an 87 to finish fourth out of 38 regional golfers. Swenby netted a 42 on the front nine and then hit for 45 on the back nine.
Sophomores Gabe Knops and Ian Radintz were the next top finishers for the Hilltoppers. Knops tallied a 96 with a pair of 48s to take 13th place. Radintz tallied 100 strokes in regional competition with a front nine tally of 46 and a 54 on the final nine for 15th place.
Rounding out the local’s scores were freshmen Ben Wittmer and Jared Hager. Wittmer shot a 60 on the first nine and then a 57 to sign off with a 117 to take 29th. Hager was consistent with 65 strokes on the front nine holes and a 66 on the back nine for a 131 and 37th place.
Nick Higley, a senior from Eleva-Strum, led the Cardinals and all players with an eye-popping, one-under-par 71 to earn medalist honors. Durand senior Dawson Kurth, the D-SC golfer of the year, took second with an 76 while junior teammate Simon Bauer came in third after shooting an 86.
The top four individual qualifiers from the Clear Lake meet were Mondovi’s Chandler Pichler (92), Spencer Anderson (93) of Osseo-Fairchild, and Cole Sopiarz (96) and Peter Wier (97), both of Cadott.
The first two teams and top three individuals, who are not members of a qualifying team, at the Luck/Frederic Sectional will advance to the state golf meet which will be held Monday and Tuesday, June 14 and 15 at Trappers Turn in Wisconsin Dells.
