With a pair of second-place finishes in Dunn-St. Croix meets last week, the Glenwood City golf team has now finished in second place in four of the conferences five get-togethers.
Those runner-up performances have helped solidify the Hilltoppers’ hold on second place in the current team standings as the regular season passed the halfway mark following battles at Whitetail near Colfax and Spring Valley last week. With just four conference matches remaining until the May 25 D-SC tournament in Durand, Glenwood City (18.5) has a four and a half point advantage over third-place Mondovi (14) and a six-point push over Colfax/Elk Mound (12.5) who is in fourth. Durand, winners of all five meets thus far, is in front with 25 points.
After finishing in a third-place tie with Colfax/Elk Mound in the April 29 meet in Durand, the Toppers’ once again found their collective groove at Whitetail May 3 where they tallied a 210 and then sliced three strokes off that to finish with a 207 in Spring Valley three days later.
Team success was predicated on individual success for the Toppers who have three members on the all-conference teams. Junior Owen Swenby finished sixth at Whitetail and tied for seventh in Spring Valley to move to the top of the second team all-conference rankings while sophomore teammate Ian Radintz made it into fifth overall with a pair of fifth-place finishes in the recent two meets, good for the final slot in the first team all-conference standings. Another Topper sophomore, Gabe Knops, is also currently listed on the second team all-conference squad.
The Hilltoppers will look to continue their consistent play with another three meets set over the next eight days. The locals played at Whitetail for the second and final time this season on Monday, May 10 and will host their first home conference meet today, Wednesday, May 12 at Glen Hills Golf Course before heading to Mondovi for a second time this year next Monday, May 17. Glenwood City will host the final regular-season D-SC meet on Wednesday, May 19.
Whitetail
Ian Radintz shot a 47 and Owen Swenby a 49 to finish fifth and sixth in the final individual standings in the D-SC meet at Whitetail GC Monday, May 3. Those performances helped springboard the Hilltoppers to their third runner-up finish in four meets this season.
Freshman Ben Wittmer shot a 52 and Gabe Knops turned in a 59 to complete Glenwood City’s team score of 207. Connor Berends rounded out varsity play with an 89 in the nine-hole meet.
Durand took first for the fourth straight time with a 175 as Dawson Kurth shot a 38 for the Panthers whose other scoring golfers had a 45 and two 46s. Colfax/Elk Mound came in third after scoring 212 and Mondovi finished with a 216 for fourth. Spring Valley/Elmwood had an incomplete team and did not score in the five-school conference match.
Jared Hager had a 74 to top GC’s JV squad with Damian Schervington hitting for a 77 and Lewis Swanepoel turned in an 81.
Spring Valley
Glenwood City’s top four varsity golfers all finished within four strokes of each other when the Toppers hit the links at the Spring Valley Golf Course Thursday, May 6.
Ian Radintz was the top shooter for the Hilltoppers again as he finished with a score of 50. Owen Swenby carded a 52 while Gabe Knops and Ben Wittmer tallied 54 each. Jared Hager completed GC’s varsity five with a 70.
Those top four scores when combined gave the Toppers 210 which was enough to put them in second in the final team standings. Durand’s Dawson Kurth broke 40 for a second straight meet, shooting a 39 to lead the Panthers to their fifth consecutive first-place finish in as many meets. Mondovi edged Colfax/Elk Mound 218 to 219 for third.
For the Hilltoppers’ junior varsity, Connor Berends and Damian Swanepoel both shot 71s and Lewis Swanepoel tallied an 81.
