The Lady Hilltoppers’ Girls Basketball team were able to play two games this past week with Friday’s game against Durand being postponed to January 22nd.
Last Monday, January 11th, Glenwood City hosted the Augusta Beavers and lost by a mere two points. Then on the following night, Tuesday, January 12th, the Mondovi Buffaloes came to town and ran over the Toppers by a score of 77-36.
The Lady Toppers have three games on the schedule this week. They played the Spring Valley Cardinals on Monday, January 18th and will host the Boyceville Bulldogs on Thursday, the 21st before traveling to Durand on Friday for the make-up game. Glenwood City will be open next week’s play on the road against conference co-leader Colfax on Tuesday, January 26.
The Toppers currently have an overall record of three wins and nine losses, and are two and four in conference play.
Augusta
According to head coach Carly Kittilson, the Lady Toppers started out strong against the Beavers. They were putting a lot of pressure on the Beavers defensively and they were making some great passes.
“We rebounded hard and gave great effort,” Kittilson said.
Glenwood City had a nice 32-23 lead at the end of the first half.
Unfortunately in the second half, the Toppers had too many unforced turnovers.
“We need to take care of the ball and understand that when we have the lead, we need to make smarter plays,” remarked Kittilson.
To make matters worse, the Beavers got hot with their shooting and took the lead.
In the end, the Lady Toppers faltered and were outscored 43-32 in the second half thus losing by two at 64-66.
Kittilson noted, “Our girls played until the end.”
She complimented the team saying, “We had a nice play out of a time out where we needed a three pointer. The girls executed the play exactly how we said in the time out and Delanie hit a nice three pointer when we needed it late in the game. I am proud of our hustle and effort, we just need to take better care of the basketball, especially in close games.”
Delanie Fayerweather led the team with 15 points followed closely by Kendall Schutz with 14 and Bella Rassbach with 13. Maddie Oehlke grabbed 14 rebounds followed by her sister, Ryeah, with nine and Fayerweather with eight. Yasmin Mendez had four assists and Schutz and Rassbach were the steal leaders with five and four, respectively.

Mondovi
Despite the large scoring difference against one of the Dunn-St. Croix’s top teams, Coach Kittilson was happy with her girls’ play at least at the beginning of the game.
“I was happy with how we started the game on our first few possessions,” stated Kittilson. “We took care of the ball and passed it around to get an open shot. We did some nice things on our press early in the game. Our girls did a nice job taking care of the ball against Mondovi’s press.”
However, as the game continued the Glenwood City girls started to look sluggish, seemingly worn out from the previous night’s game, or something else, they lost their intensity against the Buffaloes.
Kittilson summed it up this way, “As the game went on, we started to not move our feet as well on defense and we just allowed Mondovi too many lay-up opportunities. There were times they pushed the ball and we didn’t get back in time to get the stop. The nice thing is we get to play them again and hopefully we improve the things we need to and get the win the next time.”
Mondovi, who led 37-20 at the intermission, outscored Glenwood City 40-16 in the second half to win by 41 points.
Maddie Oehlke was the only Topper in double digits with ten points.
