The Spring Valley Cardinals and the Mondovi Buffaloes were latest victors on the basketball court in the games played this past week against the Glenwood City boys.
The Toppers fell to the Cardinals on Tuesday, January 21st at home by a score of 37-64. Then on Friday, January 24th the Toppers lost to the Buffaloes in Mondovi 37-61 as they remained winless, slipping to 0-7 in conference play and 0-12 overall.
Glenwood City played a non-conference game in Siren on Monday before challenging both conference co-leaders. The Toppers will travel south to take on the Durand Panthers Thursday, January 30 and will returning home next Tuesday, February 4 to host Colfax.
Spring Valley
The Toppers were the first to strike in the game against the Cardinals when Drew Olson hit for two under the basket. The Hilltoppers were taking their time and really working the ball around for the open shot.
Unfortunately, a lot of their early shots were hitting the rim and not falling through. As a result, the Cardinals scored eleven unanswered points, taking an 11-2 lead.
Brandyn Hallquist got the Toppers back on the board with a three-point base line shot. The Cardinals answered with two more points before Gavin Janson hit a baseline three from the opposite side. Two more points from the Cards and then Hallquist with another from outside the arc. The Toppers had narrowed the Cardinal lead to four at 11-15.
As play continued, the Toppers kept it close and with just over four minutes on the clock pulled to within two (18-20) when Owen Swenby hit both ends of a one-and-one. The Cardinals then added four more points to increase their lead to six.
With two minutes left in the half, Mitchell Bilese cut that lead in half with three pointer from the top of the arc.
After turnovers from both sides, the Cards regained that six-point lead with another basket from outside the arc.
The remaining minute or so of the half was a sloppy ordeal with turnovers from the Toppers and missed shots from the Cardinals. After grabbing his own rebound, Swenby found himself at the free throw line with .3 seconds left on the clock and hit the first of his free throws but missed on the second.
When the buzzer rang the Cardinals took a five point, 27-22 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Toppers were really struggling to penetrate the paint whereas most of the Cardinals’ points came from the paint during the game.
The Toppers biggest down fall in the second half was turnovers and the ability of the Cardinals to capitalize on way too many of them. That, and the fact that the Toppers could only get two three point shots to fall in the half, resulted in the Cardinals slowly stretching out their lead over the course of the second half and outscoring the Toppers 37-15 in the half.
After the game, head coach Tristan Kittilson commented, “I thought we played a very competitive first half against a very good Spring Valley team in 22-27. We weren’t able to keep up that same level of play in the second half and unfortunately, went away from the things we were doing well in the first half and reverted back to some of our costly habits.”
Kittilson credited Cole Logghe for providing a nice spark and quality play off the bench.
Brandyn Hallquist led the Toppers with ten points, seven rebounds, and four assists. For the Cardinals, currently 4-3 in conference play, Aaron Borgerding, who barely missed a shot, led their team with 22 points.

Mondovi
On Friday, the Toppers traveled to Mondovi to take on the Buffaloes who are currently 4-3 in the Dunn-St. Croix conference.
Coach Kittilson remarked that he really liked the way the boys came out Friday night. He said that they had a great start really locking in on defense and making them take a lot of outside shots.
Unfortunately for the Hilltoppers, they couldn’t sink their buckets and were soon behind 14-29 at the end of the first half.
Kittilson lamented, “We just could not get much going at all on the offensive side and then our decision making and execution starting to slip and we got into too big of a hole.”
He went on to say that they showed a lot of heart and good team basketball all night long!
The Hilltoppers were outscored 32-23 in the second half, resulting in a 37-61 loss.
Brandyn Hallquist was once again the leading scorer for the Toppers with 15 points. He also had 11 rebounds for the night.
