The opening week of the basketball season held mixed results for the Glenwood City girls as they split a pair of non-conference road games.
The Lady Hilltoppers got their season off to a good start by winning their first outing of the season, a road contest against the Cumberland Beavers on Tuesday, November 19, 49-24. However, the result flipped the other way Thursday, November 21, when they fell to the host Prescott Cardinals, 63-21.
The Lady Toppers are now off until the Tuesday, December 3 home opener against Ellsworth which will be followed by the Dunn-St. Croix Conference opener in Durand on Thursday, December 5.
Cumberland
Against Cumberland, head coach Dean Fayerweather remarked, “We came out and played strong”.
He went on to say, with first-game jitters and first-time varsity players, the outcome was perfect.
According Fayerweather, it took a while for his players to “get in a groove and fight through being tired”. With low player numbers, this may continue to be problem throughout the season as Fayerweather just doesn’t have the depth on the bench.
Fayerweather stated that Makiah Schutz played well in the post and finished as the team’s and game’s leading scorer with 16 points.
“Juniors Delanie Fayerweather, Madelyn Oehlke and Yasmin Leandro-Mendez helped keep the defense tight,” noted Fayerweather but he also admitted that there are still a lot of things to work on, but said it was nice to start the season off with a win.
Delanie Fayerweather also tallied 11 points for the Hilltoppers with Oehlke and Leandro-Mendez chipping in for nine and seven points respectively.

Prescott
The thrill of an season opening win over Cumberland proved short lived for Glenwood City as Prescott’s 63-21 win brought the Toppers back down to reality.
The 42-point defeat showed the Toppers that the Cardinals were a bit out of their league.
Coach Fayerweather conceded that Prescott was “above our level”. He went on to say that the Cardinals are a quick and dominant team.
The Hilltoppers were out hustled and out played and with little depth on the Topper bench they were soon wore out.
The Cardinals had a monumental lead at the end of the first half – 39-4.
Later in the game, two of the Hilltopper starters got into foul trouble, only making matters worse for the locals.
Junior Madelyn Oehlke was Glenwood City’s top scorer with nine points while Makiah Schutz finished with five and Yasmin Leandro-Mendez tallied three points.
Prescott was led by Isabella Lenz, who tallied a game-high 21 points including three triples, and Nicole Dalman’s 13 points.
