ELK MOUND — With Elk Mound and St. Croix Central both drawing the top seeds and first-round byes in their respective WIAA divisional baseball tournaments (the Mounders in Division 3 and Panthers in Division 2), the pair decided to take on one another in a non-conference contest last Thursday to cap their respective regular season schedules.
In a battle of conference champions, Elk Mound improved to 19-1 with a 4-1 home victory over St. Croix Central (14-4), the top finisher in the Middle Border.
Due to an early printing deadline for the Memorial Day holiday, no other statistical information was available by last Friday’s deadline.
Elk Mound began its playoff competition yesterday (Tuesday, May 28) when it hosted #8 Eau Claire Regis in a regional semifinal contest. A win would give the Mounders another home game at Village Park in today’s regional championship versus the winner of the other semifinal between #5 Neillsville/Granton, a 3-0 victor over Colfax last Thursday, and #13 Chippewa Falls McDonell Central, who upset fourth-seeded Boyceville 12-8 that same day.
