Topper softball goes 1-2 in conference games

The Glenwood City softball team dropped its fifth straight contest when it opened last week’s play with a 12-1 home loss to the defending Dunn-St. Croix champs from Mondovi on Monday, April 29.
The following day, Tuesday, April 30, the Hilltoppers traveled to Plum City for a game against the Elmwood-Plum City Wolves. Both teams entered the matchup with just one conference win, but Glenwood City emerged with its second D-SC victory of the season following an 11-3 win.
With an extra day to rest, thanks to Thursday’s rain showers, Glenwood City went to Elk Mound on Friday, May 3 for its third conference game of the week. The Mounders, however, scored seven runs in the first inning en route to a 10-0, five-inning victory.
With the latest outcomes, Glenwood City heads into the final week of the regular season sporting a 2-7 conference mark and 3-7 overall.
The Hilltoppers have a full slate of games this week. They were in Spring Valley Monday. Glenwood City then started a three-game home stand against Durand-Arkansaw on Tuesday, Boyceville comes to town on Thursday followed by Elk Mound on Friday. The Toppers then play a tournament this Saturday in Gilman. They then host Colfax in the conference and regular season finale next Monday, May 13.
Mondovi
Mondovi stampeded to an early lead and never looked back as it defeated the host Hilltoppers 12-1 in a five-inning contest last Monday, April 29.
The Buffaloes scored in all five innings. They plated three runs in the first inning, two more in the second, one in the third and fifth frames and five in the fourth for the 11-run win.
Meanwhile, Mondovi pitching limited Glenwood City’s offensive opportunities throughout much of the game. The Hilltoppers finished with just three hits in the game, singles by Kiley Leduc, Sydney Grant and Jenna McCarthy.
Senior Maddie Klatt absorbed the loss in the throwing circle. In three innings of work, Klatt surrendered six runs on seven hits, walked three and had a strikeout. Kirah Krueger did not fare much better in her two innings pitching as she allowed seven runs on four hits and finished with three Ks and a pair of walks.
Elmwood-Plum City
What a difference a day can make!
After being beaten by the Buffaloes a day earlier, the Hilltoppers returned the favor when they visited Plum City to take on the Wolves of Elmwood-Plum City on Tuesday, April 30.
Glenwood City scored a pair of runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings and five times in the fourth to defeat Elmwood-Plum City 11-3.
Avery Rubenzer and Brooklyn Brite each had a double for the Hilltoppers, who finished with nine hits in the game. Madison Caress, Sydney Grant and Nikki Multhauf each had a pair of hits in the win. Caress finished with four RBIs, Jenna McCarthy and Multhauf each had a pair and Grant scored three times.
Kirah Krueger threw all seven inning for the Hilltoppers to earn the win. She allowed just three runs on three hits, struck out eight Wolves batters and walked five.
Elk Mound
After the rain postponed Glenwood City’s game in Elk Mound by one day, the two squads met Friday, May 3.
Elk Mound dominated the five-inning affair 10-0 as it knocked out 13 hits including three for extra bases.
The Mounders scored seven runs in the bottom of the first and then ended the game with three scores in its half of the fifth.
Glenwood City managed just two hits off Elk Mound pitching ace Hailey Meyer. Sydney Grant and Jenna McCarthy each had a single.
Maddie Klatt suffered the throwing loss as she gave up 12 hits and all ten runs to the Mounders.
