With the weather cooperating for the most part, the Elk Mound boys’ and girls’ track and field squads were able to partake in a pair of multi-school invitationals last week.
The Mounder boys’ finished second out of nine teams in last Tuesday’s Baldwin-Woodville Invitational that included schools from the Middle Border, Lakeland, Heart O’ North and Dunn-St. Croix conferences. The boys tallied 133 points in the April 25 meet to place second to Grantsburg who scored 138. The Elk Mound girls’ squad finished sixth out of nine schools at the Baldwin-Woodville meet after collecting 69 points.
Just two days later, Elk Mound competed at the Boyceville Invitational were the boys once again copped a second-place finish in the 8-team event with 137 points while the girls came in eighth after scoring 51 points.
Elk Mound will also compete in a pair of meets this week. The Mounders were in Bloomer yesterday (Tuesday, May 2) and go to Colfax Thursday. Next Tuesday, May 9, Elk Mound travels to Mondovi.
Baldwin-Woodville
Keinin Miller was a double winner for the Mounder boys in Baldwin April 25. The sophomore sprinted to gold in the 100 meters (:11.41) and the 200 meters (:23.02). Junior teammate Carson Streifel also scored points in both of those events taking second in the 200 m (:23.79) and fourth in the 100 m (:11.58).
Grandt Mueller, another Mounder junior, placed in three events. He won the high jump by clearing 6’ 3”, was the runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 19’ 8.75” and placed third in the 110 m high hurdles after running a time of :16.87.
Seniors Aiden Schiferl and Ian Hazen finished first and second, respectively, in the 1,600 meter run. Schiferl had a winning time of 4:51.45 with Hazen finishing less than two second later in 4:53.39. Another senior pair, Lucas Hanson and AJ Miller, copped the silver and bronze medals in the 400 meters. Hanson finished in :54.76 to take second and Miller placed third in :55.46.
Elk Mound had several other boys and relays finish in the top eight to score points.
Jesse Moyer placed fifth in the 3,200 m run, sixths went to Brooks Burcaw in the 110 m high hurdles and Tobey Westcott in the 300 m intermediate hurdles, Tyler Gagner placed seventh in the 100 and 400 meter dashes as did Bodie Folczyk in the 1,600 meters, and Jackson Gehweiler took eighth in the 300 m intermediate hurdles.
All four of the boys’ relays placed with the 4×800 m taking second, two 4×400 m teams took third and fourth, the 4×100 m team was fourth and the 4×200 m squad finished sixth.
On the girls’ side, the only first place turned in by Elk Mound was its 4×100 meter relay team which had a winning time of :52.90. The 4×200 m team placed second (4:20.57).
While the Mounder girls did not have an individual winner at the Baldwin-Woodville Invite, senior Kate Mohr capped her day of competition with a trio of second-place finishes. She was the silver medalist in the 100 m high hurdles (:17.75), 300 meter low hurdles (:52.05) and the high jump (4’ 10”).
Sister Carly Mohr was the only other multiple place winner for the Elk Mound ladies taking home a fourth in the 100 m high hurdles and a seventh in the 300 m lows.
Junior Marley King placed third in the 1,600 m run, fellow juniors Ella Audorf and Lydia Levra finished fifth in the discus throw and the 200 m dash, respectively, senior Aleya Hadenfeldt came in sixth in the 100 meters followed by freshman Taylor Frinack who was seventh, and in the 200 meters, freshman Allie Robel crossed the finish line in eighth place.
Boyceville Invitational
Although Elk Mound did not have all of its athletes compete in Boyceville April 27, particularly those on the boys’ team, the Mounders still had nearly 20 individual competitors place and score points in the meet including seven in multiple events.
Seniors Grandt Mueller, Ian Hazen and Aiden Schiferl each scored first-place finishes and placed in multiple events for the Elk Mound boys who finished second (137) in the eight-team event behind Glenwood City who tallied 158 points. The Mounders and Hilltoppers will likely battle it out for this year’s Dunn-St. Croix championship at the conference meet which will be held May 16 in Durand.
Mueller won the 110 meter high hurdles (:17.13) and placed third in the triple jump (39’ 3”).
Hazen won the 800 meters in 2:09.85 with Schiferl taking second with a time of 2:10.44. The pair flipped finishes in the 3,200 meters where Schiferl took first in 10:50.60 with Hazen coming in second at 10:51.09.
Fellow seniors Tobey Westcott and Jackson Gehweiler also scored points in multiple events. Westcott took second in the 300 m intermediate hurdle (:48.55), was third in the 110 m high hurdles (:19.38) and finished fifth in the pole vault. Gehweiler was third in the 300 m intermediate hurdles (:49.63) and seventh in the high jump.
Junior Bodie Folczyk placed third in the 800 m (2:15.98). Landon Kasakaitas was fourth in the shot put.
Caleb Beskow took fifth in the 1,600 m, sixth-place finishes went to Cooper Reese (100 m), Teegan Wright (1,600 m), Gavin Sundeen (discus) and Trevor Best (3,200 m), and securing eighths were Sam Heath (1,600 m) and Rownan Soul-Stewart (triple jump).
In addition, all four of the boys’ relays placed once again. The 4×100 was second, the 4×400 came in fourth and the 4×200 and 4×800 squads both placed fifth.
Sisters Kate and Carly Mohr each placed in a trio of events in Boyceville.
Kate, the senior, picked up her team’s only victory with a win in the 100 m high hurdles in a time of :17:25. She also grabbed third-place finishes in the 300 meter low hurdles (:53.53) and the high jump (4’ 8”). Carly, a junior, nipped her older sister for second in the 300 m low hurdles in (53.52), was fifth in the 100 m highs (:18.42) and placed fifth in the high jump (4’ 4”) .
Junior Marley King took sixth in the 800 m and was seventh in the 400 m. Junior Addison Young copped a seventh in the pole vault and freshman Nouchi Yang placed eighth in the shot put.
The girls’ 4×800 meter relay finished fourth.
