The Elk Mound Millers 17U American Legion Baseball split a pair of close games last week, losing 2-1 to Alma-Pepin and defeating Stanley 2-0.
Alma
The Millers traveled to Alma High School to take on Alma-Pepin on Wednesday, June 23rd. The Millers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Mason Yarrington singled and scored on a double by Jamison Flatland. Alma-Pepin answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning and the score remained tied at 1-1 until the sixth inning when Alma-Pepin pushed across another run when their leadoff batter reached on an error, stole second and came around to score on a base hit to left-field to give Alma-Pepin a 2-1 lead. The Millers failed to answer in the top of the seventh.
Mitch Medin started on the mound and gave up one run on three hits over five innings. He struck out nine and walked three. Jamison Flatland pitched the 6th and gave up an unearned run while taking the loss. Flatland also had a double and drove in the Millers only run at the plate. Dylyn Hiitola added a double for the Millers who had seven hits for the game.
Stanley
The Millers rode the stellar pitching of Jamison Flatland to a 2-0 victory over Stanley on Thursday, June 24th in their first home game of the season at Lion’s Club Park in Elk Mound. Flatland pitched a seven inning, one-hit shutout and only allowed two runners to reach as far as second base during the game.
The Millers threatened to score in the bottom of the 1st when they loaded the bases with only one out on a walk and two hit batters. However, they couldn’t take advantage the pitcher’s wildness and the inning ended on a double-play when Brian Tuschl, Jr. hit a line drive to right field and the runner was caught off first base.
The score remained 0-0 until the bottom of the fourth when the Millers loaded the bases with no outs on consecutive singles by Mitch Medin, Flatland and Dylyn Hiitola. Tuschl, Jr. drew a walk to drive in a run and Brodee Everson plated the other run on a fielder’s choice groundout. Flatland shut the door allowing no hits over the final three innings. For the day, Flatland struck out seven and walked one over seven innings of work.
The Millers return to the field with an away game at Osseo on Tuesday, June 29th and a home game vs. Hudson 16U on Thursday, July 1st.
