Heading into this season, the Boyceville softball team had aspirations of competing for a conference championship, and although it is still early, the Bulldogs are showing they are a team to be reckoned with in this year’s Dunn-St. Croix title chase.
Boyceville moved to 2-0 in league play last Thursday, April 10 when they went to Mondovi and nipped the Lady Buffaloes, last year’s conference runners-up, 7-6 in a thrilling contest.
The following day, the Bulldogs traveled to the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston where they played three games over two days and finished 2-1. After dropping a 4-3 decision to Random Lake Friday, April 11, Boyceville’s first loss of the season, the Bulldogs rebounded for a pair of wins Saturday as they defeated Chetek-Weyerhaeuser 16-6 and Loyal/Greenwood 8-4.
Boyceville hosted Durand-Arkansaw Monday and will go to Glenwood City this Thursday, April 17. The Bulldogs then return home to play Pepin/Alma next Monday, April 21 and Elmwood-Plum City on Tuesday, April 22.

Mondovi
Boyceville never trailed when it went to Mondovi for a Dunn-St. Croix softball contest last Thursday, but the Buffaloes sure made it interesting.
After building a 7-2 lead through the first four and a half innings, Boyceville saw Mondovi whittle away at that advantage until the Bulldogs led by just a single run. Boyceville did hold on for the 7-6 win to stay unbeaten in league play.
Boyceville took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Aubrey Malean singled home a pair of runs.
Mondovi took a run back in their half of the fourth, but in the top half of the very next inning, Boyceville pushed five runs across home plate for a 7-1 lead.
In that decisive fifth frame, Brooklyn Talmage opened with a hit, after a pop out by Zoey Hellendrung, Emma Harvey reached on a Buffaloes’ fielding error, and Ella Lain followed with a RBI double that brought Talmage home. Lillian Lain flew out to left field, but the sacrifice fly scored Harvey with the Bulldogs’ second run of the inning. Paige Fenton doubled home Ella Lain. Sydney Lunderville reached on an error. Malean then sent a hit to center field that scored Fenton and Lunderville.
Mondovi scored once in its half of the fifth and added three more in its sixth frame to cut the Boyceville lead to 7-5.
The Buffaloes added a run in their seventh before the Bulldogs were able to retire the side and preserve a one-run win.
Malean threw all seven innings for the Bulldogs to earn the win. She allowed six hits and six runs while striking out an impressive 13 Buffalo batters and walked just a pair.
Malean also helped her own cause at the plate, finishing the game with a 3-for-4 performance and three RBIs. Talmage had a pair of hits in four visits while Paige Fenton and Ella Lain each had a double for the Bulldogs who tallied nine hits, but committed three errors.
Random Lake
A pair of runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning lifted Random Lake to a 4-3 win over Boyceville when the two squads met Friday, April 11 at the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston.
Random Lake scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning when Boyceville committed a pair of errors.
That lead held until the fourth, when Boyceville senior Delaney Olson reached on a bunt single and later scored on an Ella Lain hit.
Boyceville took its first lead of the game in the top of the sixth frame when Olson again reached base, this time on a Random Lake error, and scored when Lillian Lain was issued a bases-loaded walk.
Random Lake scored in the bottom half of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, Lunderville drew an opening walk and scored the go-ahead run on Talmage’s ground-out to short.
Random Lake, however, scored two runs in the bottom half of the seventh without the aid of a hit as Boyceville committed an error and let the winning run cross home plate on a passed ball.
Despite surrendering just two hits and striking out a dozen batters in seven innings in the pitching circle, Aubrey Malean took the loss.
All four of Boyceville’s hits were singles by Lillian Lain, Talmage, Hellendrung and Lunderville.
