MAUSTON — The Boyceville baseball team had to travel a few hours south to finally get its 2025 diamond season underway.
The Bulldogs journeyed to the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston, WI last Friday, April 4 where they played in a pair of non-conference contests to open a new baseball season.
Boyceville returned home with a split. It dropped the opener to Columbus Catholic 5-2, but rallied for a 6-3 win over Poynette in the second game.
The Bulldogs (1-1) are scheduled to play four games over the next week. They hosted defending champion Elk Mound yesterday (Tuesday, April 8) in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference opener for both teams. Boyceville will be in Mondovi for another D-SC showdown Thursday before hosting its home opener against Clear Lake the following day. Durand-Arkansaw will come to Evenson Field next Monday, April 14.
Columbus Catholic
Boyceville found hits and runs at a premium when it played Columbus Catholic of Marshfield in the season opener at Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston April 4.
Despite belting a trio of doubles – two by Zach Hellendrung and another off the bat of Carson Roemhild, the Bulldogs managed just six hits and two runs in the seven-inning non-conference contest which they lost 5-2.
Hellendrung and Roemhild, both juniors, each finished with a pair of hits to lead the Boyceville offense. Roemhild also scored both Bulldog runs while Hellendrung had one of the team’s two RBIs. Tucker Lindstrom and Nathan Jensen each had a hit.
Fellow junior Landyn Leslie took the mound loss as he surrendered three runs on six hits, he struck out two and walked a pair in three and two-third innings of work. Isaac Williams pitched three innings during which he gave up a pair of runs on three hits, walked four and struck out four. Hellendrung pitched a third inning of scoreless and hitless ball.
Boyceville committed two errors in its first game of the season.
Poynette
Boyceville found itself trailing twice against Poynette, 2-0 and 3-2, but a four-run six inning lifted the Bulldogs to a 6-3 win in the second game at the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston last Friday.
Poynette took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Boyceville rallied for a run in the bottom half of that same inning and then scored another in the second to tie the game.
Poynette forged ahead with a third-inning score and held on to that one-run advantage until the bottom of the sixth when the Bulldogs stepped on home plate four more times for a come-from-behind win.
Again, the Bulldogs finished with six hits compared to nine by Poynette. Carson Roemhild was the lone Bulldog batter with multiple hits in the game as he finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Hellendrung, Cole Retz, Leslie and Andrew Tonn each finished with a base hit. Retz also had two RBIs.
Roemhild started the game on the mound and went four innings but got the no decision. He allowed all three Poynette runs on six hits while striking out three and walking just one. Hellendrung threw the final three frames to secure the win as he scattered three hits and did not allow a run and finished with three Ks and issued a trio of bases on balls.
The Bulldogs had two fielding errors in the game.
