Glenwood City’s boys’ 4×100 relay running well

By Missy Klatt

AMERY – The Hilltoppers headed to Amery on Tuesday, May 1st for a large meet against 16 other teams, some larger, some smaller. For last year’s boy’s 4x100m relay state champion team, consisting of Jake Nelson, Jake Kopaz, Darian Multhauf and Carson Strong this was a good chance to see if they still had “the right stuff”. The boys proved that they are ready to run with the big boys so to speak as they took first place in both the 4x100m and the 4x200m relays. Osceola came in second in both events.

“This is always a very tough meet with lots of schools.” Commented head coach Rick Tiberg “We had some of the best performances from everyone.” He goes on to say that “With Yasmin [Mendez], Kristin [Dayton], Bella [Rassbach], Quinn [Taylor], Darian [Multhauf], and Ethan [Kahler] making the finals in the shot, triple jump, long jump, triple jump, 100 m dash, and 110 high hurdles, it was a great meet to see where we are at.”

Colfax

On Thursday the Hilltoppers attended the Colfax meet which was another chance to compete against conference teams and a few others. The girls’ team had a great showing taking second place just one point behind the host team. The Topper girls’ relay teams had an awesome day taking first in both the 4x400m relay and the 4x800m relay and third in the 4x100m relay and the 4x200m relay.

Freshman Marie Garcia and Yasmin Mendez took third place honors in the 100m and shot put respectively. Senior Elizabeth Wink was third in the 400m and foreign exchange student, Julia Dinkel leapt to a third place finish in the high jump.

The gentlemen Hilltoppers finished in the middle of the pack in sixth place with 64 points, right behind the host team with 67 points. The 4x100m and 4x200m relay teams minus Jake Kopaz took second in both events. Peter Hill had a good day in the field, placing second in the high jump with a personal best jump of 6’.

Seniors, Carson Strong (400m), Jake Nelson (200m) and Quinn Taylor (long & triple jumps) all had fourth places finishes.

The Hilltoppers head back to Colfax for another meet on Tuesday, May 8th and then will be hosting a meet on Thursday, May 10th before conference the following Tuesday at Mondovi.
