GC softball wins three, lose one game this week

By Missy Klatt

After a successful start to this past week’s games, head coach Matthew Schutz has something to smile about. The Lady Hilltoppers took two games from Plum City (10-0 and 19-0) and one from Mondovi (9-1) before falling to Elk Mound (1-5).

Schutz commented that “our bats have finally awakened. Even though all contact with the bat isn’t a legit hit due to errors, the ball is in play to make something happen verses striking out. Runners are advancing and scoring.”

In the first game of the double header against Plum City, Jenesa Klinger was 2 for 3 with a double, Cortney Lawson went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and Delaine Fayerweather had a double and 2 RBIs. All this in just five innings as the Toppers were soon out ahead with four runs in the first, two in the second and three in the fourth before scoring early in the fifth, thanks to back to back doubles from Mariah Voeltz and Klinger. These were the 10 unanswered runs needed to end the game.

Maggie Wallin got the win for the first game pitching a one hitter, striking out 13 and walking 4.

The second game against Plum City only took three innings to win as there is a 15 run rule after three innings. The Toppers didn’t waste any time in the second game as they scored 12 runs in the first inning off of 8 hits. The Hilltoppers then added 4 in the second and 3 in the third while they kept Plum City scoreless behind the pitching of Maddie Oehlke. Oehlke gave up one hit and struck out six in the three innings.

Maggie Wallin had the team’s first home run of the season during the first inning. She went 2 for 4 in the game with 5 RBIs. Emily Hill also had a big game at the plate with a double, a triple and 4 RBIs.

Mondovi

On Tuesday, May 1st the Toppers hosted the Mondovi Buffaloes. It was another great game for the Toppers as they were able to hold the Buffaloes to just one run behind the superb pitching of Maggie Wallin. She had 12 strike outs for the game with six coming in the first two innings where she faced a total of seven batters.

While the defense was keeping the Buffaloes in check the Hilltopper offense came alive scoring two runs in the second, four in the third and then adding three more in the sixth when Jenesa Klinger homered with two on base. Mondovi’s lone run came at the top of the fifth inning.

Delaney Fayerweather, Cortney and Bella Lawson all had 2 RBIs for the game, while Maddie Oehlke was 2 for 3 at the plate.

Coach Schutz also enthused that “our pitching in the three games was fantastic.”

Elk Mound

The Toppers finished out their week by visiting the hard hitting Mounders of Elk Mound. Unfortunately in this low scoring game it was the Toppers who came out on the losing end as they were only able to score one run in the first inning when Jenesa Klinger crossed the plate. “We didn’t hit the ball well which left a few runners in scoring position.” Stated Coach Schutz. He went on to say that except for the third inning where they got a hit to roll to the back fence, we played pretty good defense on a team that came out swinging the bat.

The Lady Hilltoppers will be at Elmwood on Tuesday the 8th before returning home on Thursday when they host Pepin/Alma.
