GC baseball comes up short in doubleheader against Cardinals

By Missy Klatt

SPRING VALLEY – The Hilltoppers headed to Spring Valley on Thursday, May 3rd for a double header against the Cardinals, where they came up short in both games. In the first game, which was a conference game, the Cardinals had a 3-0 lead after three innings. The Toppers got their first run of the game when Hadin DeSmith singled and later scored after an RBI single from Jake Nadeau in the top of the fourth.

However the Cardinals came right back and tacked on two more runs at the bottom of the fourth. The tide was starting to turn for the Toppers at the top of the fifth. With two outs and two on, Bryce Fayerweather came to bat and hit a three run homerun, driving in Marcus Hurtgen and DeSmith. Unfortunately that was it for Topper scoring. The Cardinals added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game 7-4.

Coach Shane Strong thought that Bryce had a great game. “He was able to pitch with good command around the plate. He had a big three-run home run that put us in the game.” Strong also praised Hadin DeSmith for his pitching when he came in the game. Strong concludes by saying “You can see they are improving as the year progresses.”

In the second half of the double header the Toppers didn’t fair nearly as well as they lost 14-2. The Cardinals scored early and they scored often. The Toppers couldn’t muster any runs until the top of the fifth when Gavin Janson hit a triple and later scored. Bryce Fayerweather was the only other Topper to cross the plate.

The Toppers head to Durand on Thursday, May 10th.
