Nine return, three newcomers join GC golf team

GLENWOOD CITY — The Hilltopper Golf team like the rest of the spring sports may have to wait a little while before starting their 2018 season. In 2017 the Toppers finished third in the conference and seventh as a team in sectionals. Colin Schone also made first team All-Conference last year.

[emember_protected] Second year head coach, Tristan Kittilson has nine golfers returning from last year. Senior, Colin Schone is again their top golfer. Kittilson states that Schone is looking to have another all-conference caliber season and he really hopes to make it to Madison for the state competition. Sophomore Ethan Hanson and junior Will Owen are two others returning from last season that look to build off of very promising seasons last year.

The rest of the returnees from last year vying for those five varsity spots include seniors Riley Schutz, Emma Scholler and Spencer Oehlke; juniors Dillon Hierlmeier and Gavan Samp and sophomore Alexa Holden.

The team also has three newcomers to the team who are all new to the game of golf. They are freshman, Bryce Drill, Jacob Siegel and Noah Vang. Kittilson is looking for them to work hard and get better each day.

Despite having nine returning players with a lot of experience from last year, Kittilson states “overall we are still very young and inexperienced golfers.” He goes on to say that for the most part we are going to have our ups and downs but he is looking for each and every player to get better each day.

Coach Kittilson’s goal for this season is to have his team be in the top half of the conference and to make a strong push in regionals and sectionals.

As for the competition, Kittilson states that Spring Valley, Durand and Mondovi will all be solid teams in the conference this year. “Spring Valley has been dominate the last few years and have one of the state’s top golfers!”

Prior to taking over as head coach, Kittilson was the Hilltopper JV coach for four years. David Popko joins Kittilson as the JV coach.
