Schutz, DeSmith put up big scores in Hilltoppers’ win over Vikings

By Cara L. Dempski

GLENWOOD CITY — One scored 34 points, the other sank 23.

It was a career high for both players, and it happened at home – Glenwood City – on February 8.

Senior Riley Schutz reeled in a personal best of 34 points, and Hadin DeSmith contributed another 23 as the Hilltoppers steamrolled the visiting Colfax Vikings, 64-42, last Thursday night.

Topper head coach Tristan Kittilson said the game was very competitive in the first half, and box scores indicated that was the case, with the Vikings trailing the hometown Hilltoppers 31-25 as both teams headed to the locker room for a break.

“Colfax jumped out to an early lead, and we adjusted and made a good push,” the Hilltopper coach said the next morning. “We played a much better second half defensively, and we were able to come away with a much-needed win.”

The Vikings leapt out to a 10-2 lead early, but the Glenwood City squad was able to make up the slack to carry a six-point lead into intermission. The Toppers then kept chalking up the points in the second half, and limiting Colfax’s shooting prospects, to outscore the Vikings 33-17 in the half.

DeSmith scored 17 of his 23 points in the first half, while Schutz added 22 in the final 18 minutes after picking up just 12 in the first half. Peter Hill contributed four more points, and Dan Loring drained a three-point shot to round out the score at 64 points.

The win lifted the Toppers to 5-6 in the Dunn-St. Croix with just two weeks left before tournament-level competition begins. Glenwood City is 8-10 overall.

Glenwood City traveled to rival Boyceville last night, February 13, and will host Elk Mound this Friday, February 16.

They will open the final week of regular-season play next Monday, February 19 at home against non-conference foe Bloomer, before heading down to Plum City February 22 to face the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves.

The WIAA tournament will get underway on Tuesday, February 27 with regional quarterfinal play. Seedings meeting are scheduled for this coming weekend.
