OSCEOLA — Forfeits continue to plaque the Glenwood City wrestling team.
The Hilltoppers had three to four open weight classes when they traveled north to Osceola High School last Friday evening for a quadrangular dual tournament.
Glenwood City finished 1-2 in the January 26 event, handily beating Unity 52-21 but losing to the host Chieftains 50-21 and the Hudson varsity reserve 37-33.
[emember_protected] Although team success was a bit elusive for the undermanned Hilltoppers, they did enjoy several fine individual performances.
Four Glenwood City wrestlers – seniors Jacob Nadeau (126), Brad Kessler (132), and Jacob Kopacz (182) along with sophomore Tucker Lagerstrom (152) – won all three of their matches while a trio of others – freshman Andy Grant (106), senior Austin Curvello (138) and junior Bryce Fayerweather (220) – tallied a pair of wins in three bouts.
All of the Toppers’ unbeaten wrestlers at Osceola had impressive performances.
Jacob Nadeau, still ranked second in the most recent division 3, 126-pound state poll, won all three of his matches by pinfall; Brad Kessler registered a fall and two major decisions at 132 pounds; Tucker Lagerstrom had two pins at 152 pounds and a 17-0 technical fall win at 145; and Jake Kopacz, wrestling at 182 and 195 pounds, also had a pair of pins and a decision.
Harrison Chouinard went 1-1 for the Toppers at 170 pounds, Aaron Holmquist tallied a win in three tries at 113, Will Eggert was 0-1 at 120 and Nick Melendrez finished 0-3 at 160.
Senior Carson Strong, who normally wrestles at 132 pounds, did not compete at Osceola.
Glenwood City held an early 18-10 lead over host Osceola thanks to a Nadeau pin, a 10-0 major by Brad Kessler, a decision by Austin Curvello and a shutout technical fall from Tucker Lagerstrom. But the Chieftains rallied to win seven of the final eight bout including six by fall or forfeit to take a 50-21 win.
Although the squad from Hudson was officially listed as a varsity reserve team, Glenwood City head coach Shane Strong noted that four of the Raiders front-line starters, each with 25 or more season victories, competed at Osceola last Friday. And Glenwood City faired quite well coming within just four points, 37-33, of knocking off the Division 1 Hudson team.
Nadeau, Kessler, Lagerstrom and Kopacz all scored pins over their Raider opponent. Fayerweather received a forfeit at 220 and Andy Grant secured a 8-2 decision at 106.
Glenwood City dominated a depleted Unity team 52-21 for its lone win of the evening.
Grant, Holmquist, Nadeau, Lagerstrom, Kopacz and Fayerweather all pinned Eagle wrestlers. Curvello and Chouinard each received a forfeit and Kessler won a 14-3 major decision to account for the Toppers’ 52 point score.
The Hilltoppers will have a busy week with three dual matches including a pair of Dunn-St. Croix matches. Glenwood City hosted rival and sixth-ranked Boyceville Tuesday evening with a conference title on the line. GC will then wrap up the regular season with trips to Cameron on Thursday, February 1 and Spring Valley on Friday, February 2 for a pair of make-ups from previously postponed duals.
There is no conference tournament this season as the Big Rivers/Dunn-St. Croix Challenge was scrapped after River Falls no longer wanted to host the event.
