Lady Hilltoppers pick up third D-SC win against Cardinals

By Cara L. Dempski

GLENWOOD CITY — The Glenwood City girls’ basketball team has not picked up a win since mid-December, when they beat rival Boyceville at home.

The Hilltoppers finally tacked another W into the win column January 18 when they hosted Spring Valley and found their way to a 44-42 victory.

Even better? The win came in overtime.

[emember_protected] Coach Dean Fayerweather said the game was one of Glenwood City’s more complete contests of the season.

“We had multiple ladies that stepped up their game and scored collectively,” he said the following day. “The ladies hustled and played until the final buzzer in overtime.”

Fayerweather noted the Lady Cardinals are not a team to turn your back on, and had a hard time believing the team has gone so long without a win. The Toppers led 20-19 at halftime, but the Spring Valley girls turned the table to take a 20-19 lead in the second half and force another period.

In the end, though, the Cards could put together just one more scoring play, while the home team put in a pair of field goals for the win.

Hanna Strehlo picked up 13 points to lead the Hilltoppers and Jenesa Klinger contributed another 10 points. Delaney Quinn provided seven, Marian Voeltz and Alexys Curvello each scored six, and Makayla O’Brien had a single field goal for two.

Spring Valley’s Lexi Johansen led the game in scoring with 14 points.

The Lady Toppers are now 3-5 in the Dunn-St. Croix and 4-11 overall. They went to Mondovi January 23, and will face Durand at home January 26. They will head to Boyceville February 1 for the annual Coaches versus Cancer matchup to help the Bulldogs raise money for the American Cancer Society.
