Lady Mounders conquer Spartans to take winning record into holiday break

By Cara L. Dempski

SOMERSET — The way Elk Mound girls’ basketball coach Jordan Kongshaug’s emailed comments read the morning after a non-conference game in Somerset, it sounded like the ladies lost.

But it quickly became obvious that was not the case upon reading the score books for the Mounders December 21 road trip, since those indicate the Elk Mound girls bested the Somerset Lady Spartans 56-31 to take a 6-2 overall record before breaking for the winter holidays.

[emember_protected] “We had a very good defensive effort, particularly in the second half,” Kongshaug’s email read. “We didn’t shoot well, but we played hard.”

It did seem to be an off night for the Elk Mound girls, with many of their usual high-scoring players ending up on the low end of things.

The Mounders were up 33-21 at halftime before doubling up on the Spartans to outscore them 23-10 in the second half for the win.

Junior Morgan Radtke took home the night’s highest score with 18 points after sinking 8 field goals and going two for two from the line. Allie Weber kept her three-point shots to just three to tie with Ashley Gunderson-Morris at nine points, Crista Sweeney scored seven, Hailey Blaskowski picked up six, Kayla Bridges and Hannah Cedarblade scored two apiece, and Madysen Borofka made a free throw for one.

In contrast, Somerset’s highest-scoring player was Tori Gareis, who picked up eight points in the game.

Elk Mound took some time off for the Christmas holiday, but will put in an appearance at Arcadia December 28 before breaking for the New Year holiday. They will face Altoona January 2 at home before hosting Elmwood/Plum City January 4.
