Glenwood City ladies fall short in road loss at Baldwin-Woodville

By Cara L. Dempski

BALDWIN — When Dean Fayerweather and the Glenwood City Hilltoppers step onto the court for this week’s holiday tournament at home, they will already be three wins ahead of where they were last year at this time.

The Lady Toppers may be just south of the .500 mark, at 3-5 overall, after falling to the Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks 40-33 in December 21 non-conference contest, but the head coach still seemed pleased with his team’s play.

“The ladies played hard through the whole game, but just came up short in the end,” Fayerweather said the following morning. “We need to work on a few court-awareness things, and then get ready for the holiday tournament.”

Glenwood City led by four points at halftime, 14-10, but then fell away due to a 30-point scoring onslaught by the Lady Hawks in the second half to give the home team a decisive win.

Senior shooter Mariah Voeltz picked up some shooting slack from her teammates to landed 15 points and lead the Hilltoppers for scoring. Fayerweather said Voeltz also led the team in rebounds.

Makayla O’Brien and Hanna Strehlo each scored five, and Jenesa Klinger and Olivia Scalze put up the final eight points with four points each. The game’s highest individual score belonged to Blackhawk Brooke Evenson, who logged 17 points for Baldwin-Woodville.

Fayerweather and the Lady Hilltoppers took a few days off to celebrate Christmas, but will be back at it for their holiday tournament this week. The Toppers take on Osceola December 27, and face Ellsworth December 28. They will go to Clear Lake January 5 for a non-conference contest to open 2018, and then travel to Elk Mound January 9 to reopen Dunn-St. Croix play.

Glenwood City’s girls’ basketball team has a 2-2 conference record.
