Lady Hilltoppers mauled by Panthers, stay even in D-SC

GLENWOOD CITY — There was just one comment from Glenwood City girls’ basketball coach when he sent his score books via email the day after the Toppers played the Panthers.

“We never quit. Durand is good,” the message read.

The Hilltopper girls may have shown some fight against the Panthers in their December 14 home game, but it was the Cats who took the win with a 60-28 smackdown of the Glenwood City girls.

[emember_protected] The loss combined with Tuesday’s 31-17 win over rival Boyceville left the GC team with a 2-2 Dunn-St. Croix record and 3-4 overall going into the final week before the winter holidays.

Senior Jenesa Klinger was the Hilltoppers’ leading scorer with three field goals and five free throws in the contest. Alexys Curvello followed up with eight points, including the team’s only outside-the-arc shot, Mariah Voeltz and Hanna Strehlo logged three each, Delaney Quinn put in two, and Cortney Jo Lawson made one of two shots from the line.

Durand’s Shae Baier, Megan Baier and Emily Annis each tied with 12 points apiece to lead the game in scoring.

The Lady Toppers are at Baldwin-Woodville December 21, and then will host the annual Glenwood City Holiday Tournament, where they will take on Osceola December 27 and Ellsworth December 28. The team will play a non-conference contest at Clear Lake January 5 to open 2018.
