Glenwood grapplers pin loss on L/F/G/S

GLENWOOD CITY — In a wrestling dual that lasted barely three-quarters of an hour and had forfeits in half of its 14 matches, Glenwood City was able to pin a 35-21 defeat on the visiting cooperative squad from Luck/Frederic/Grantsburg/Siren (L/F/G/S) last Tuesday evening.

The Hilltoppers’ wrestling team netted three pins, a technical fall and a pair of forfeits to win the December 5 non-conference, home tilt.

Glenwood City opened an early 11-0 advantage on wins by seniors Brad Kessler and Carson Strong.

Kessler, who received honorable mention in the state’s first Division 3 individual state rankings at 126 pounds, built a 6-1 lead before pinning his opponent Junter Sellent at the 5:25 mark of the 132-pound match.

Ranked tenth in Wisconsin Online Wrestling poll at 132 pounds, Carson Strong scored a 16-1 technical fall over L/F/G/S’s Landyn Johnson at 138 pounds.

Following a double forfeit at 145 pounds, Merlin Hibbs gave the visiting Luck/Frederic/Grantsburg/Siren team its first match win with a 7-4 decision against Toppers’ sophomore Tucker Lagerstrom at 152 pounds.

Three consecutive forfeits brought the score to 23-9 in the  Hilltoppers’ favor as Nick Melendrez and Harrison Chouinard took the wins at 170 and 182 pounds.

Pins would close out the wrestling as the squads each registered a pair of pins.

L/F/G/S scored first-period falls at 195 and 285 pounds.

Senior Jacob Kopacz stuck Ben Bergund 1:29 into their 220-pound match while freshman Andy Grant capped the dual with a 2:53 pin of L/F/G/S’s Nolan Johnson at 113 pounds.

The dual had four double forfeits – beginning with 126 pounds, 145, 106 and ending with 120 pounds.

The Toppers traveled to Turtle Lake last night (December 12) for a non-conference dual with Turtle Lake/Clayton and will be competing in a tournament at Trinity School at River Ridge in Eagan, MN this Saturday, December 16 before breaking for the Christmas holiday.
