Strong, Grant finish unbeaten in John Timm Duals

GLENWOOD CITY — Once again Glenwood City found individual success at its annual, season-opening home tournament.

Three Hilltoppers finished with winning records at the 21st Annual John Timm Duals held at the high school last Saturday, December 2.

Senior Carson Strong and freshman Andrew Grant completed the six-team, dual style tournament with perfect 5-0 records while Brad senior Brad Kessler finished 4-1 in the tournament for a second consecutive year.

[emember_protected] Unfortunately, those performances did not translate into team success as the Hilltoppers had forfeits in six weight classes after senior and state place winner Jake Nadeau suffered a frightening injury in the opening dual last Saturday in which Triton, MN edged the Toppers by the slightest of margins – a single point – 36-35.

Glenwood City was able to win its next dual versus Bloomer/Colfax, 36-30, sans Nadeau but fell in the final three matches – 51-17 to tournament champion Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal; 55-12 to Somerset and to Spooner by a final count of 51-18 to finish fifth for a second consecutive year.

“We will struggle as a dual team and we knew this coming in,” said Glenwood City head coach Shane Strong. “Our goal is to improve each day as individuals. Our new kids have worked hard and are learning the basics of the sport.”

Carson Strong capped his final John Timm Duals with his second straight 5-0 performance while Andrew Grant began his with a matching effort and outcome.

Strong posted three pins and a technical fall while going unbeaten at 138 pounds.

“Carson wrestled well and was offensive,” stated his coach and father. “He didn’t face a great deal of competition, but he was on the attack each match.”

Grant had a pair of pins and a tight 8-7 decision against Cody Rasmussen in his very first varsity match to compete his run to an undefeated day.

“Andy wrestled well for his first time as a varsity wrestler. I thought he embraced the opportunity to compete,” Strong said.

All four of Brad Kessler’s victories came via pins including a pair in under a minute. His only loss came on a 6-4 decisions to Somerset junior Jared Grahovac.

“Brad showed signs of more offense than he has in the past. I like his attitude right now, he just needs to gain confidence in his mat wrestling,” noted Strong.

That trio’s combined wins accounted for two-thirds or 14 of the Hilltoppers’ total wins at this year’s John Timm Duals.

Returning state place winner Jake Nadeau was injured during his opening matching against Triton’s Cole Rasmussen, who pinned the GC senior in the second period. Nadeau began to have trouble breathing and had to be taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

Fortunately, Nadeau may be returning to the line-up sometime this week according to Coach Strong.

Junior Bryce Fayerweather  (285) and senior Jake Kopacz (195/220) capped the tournament with 2-3 marks while Tucker Lagerstrom (152), Nick Melendrez (160) and Dakota Dean-Immerman (182) each won a match.

Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal took the team title for a third straight year with a 5-0 finish. Spooner placed second at 4-1, Somerset went 3-2 for third place, Triton, MN finished 2-3 for fourth, the Toppers took fifth for a second consecutive year with a 1-4 mark and Bloomer/Colfax finished without a win to take sixth.

Glenwood City hosted Luck/Frederic/Grantsburg last evening.
