Elk Mound girls smash Fall Creek in season opener

FALL CREEK — There are any number of different words that could be used to describe one team beating another in a game.

Sports writers frequently throw around words about teams getting whitewashed, blasted, or blown away.

[emember_protected] In the case of the Elk Mound girls’ basketball team beating Fall Creek on the road November 16, the only word that comes to mind is “squash.”

As in, the Mounders squashed the Crickets in a 63-35 smackdown in last Thursday evening’s season opener for both squads.

Head coach Jordan Kongshaug had nothing but positive words for the team’s first game this year.

“I thought it was a good start to the season,” he said the morning after. “We moved the ball well offensively, and gave a great effort. I appreciated the hard work the girls put in to get the victory.”

The Crickets seemed incapable of keeping Mounder junior Morgan Radtke in check as she chalked up 26 points between 11 field goals and four charity shots last Thursday. Elk Mound senior Crista Sweeney dropped in four field goals and a free throw to tally nine points for the Mounders.

Ashley Gunderson-Morris put together seven points with two field goals and a trio of free throws, Allie Weber scored six on a field goal, a three-point shot, and free throw, Hannah Cedarblade put in a pair of outside shots for two and a charity throw to log five points, and Madysen Borofka dropped in a pair of extra shots and a field goal for four.

Alana and Brook Plaszcz rounded out the Mounder score with one free throw apiece.

In contrast, Fall Creek’s two highest-scoring players were Katelyn Haug and Jessica Kuula, both of whom nabbed eight points on the Crickets’ way to 35.

The Mounders headed to Bloomer November 21 for a contest against the Blackhawks before breaking for the holiday. They will face St. Croix Central at home November 27 before taking a little over a week off before opening their Dunn-St. Croix season at home against Durand December 5.
