In the final week of Dunn-St. Croix competition, Christa Blaser’s Lady Hilltoppers showed an ability to stick with one of the conference’s best teams before finishing the regular season on the road.

The Toppers opened the week by hosting Elk Mound last Tuesday, October 10. The Glenwood City ladies may have lost the game in straight sets, but that does not mean they gave up without a fight.

The Lady Toppers punctuated their first multi-win season in several years with a 3-1 victory over the Raiders to end the conference season with a 3-5 record and fifth-place tie with Spring Valley. The squad is 6-12 overall

Seeded 13th in their region of the WIAA Division 3 volleyball tournament, Glenwood City had a long journey last evening (October 17) as it traveled to Phillips to battle the number-four seeded Loggers. The winner of that match will play the winner of the Clear Lake/Chetek-Weyerhaeuser match October 19, with the regional final scheduled for 7 p.m. this Saturday, October 21.

Elk Mound

The October 10 match against Elk Mound was a loss on the scoreboard, but a win in every other aspect, because while the Lady Hilltoppers did not have enough “oomph” to get past the Mounders, they also did not roll over and play dead.

“They played some good ball, just no fire,” coach Christa Blaser said the following day. “We were able to keep up and have some great volleys.”

Glenwood City ended the night on the losing end of a 3-0 battle after going down 25-20 in the first, 25-16 in the second, and 25-18 in the third.

The Lady Toppers continued their season-long trend of excellent serving, averaging 98 percent against the Mounders last Tuesday night. The team logged 22 kills, with six credited to Tressa Peskar and Delaney Quinn, and four to Jenesa Klinger.

Madelyn Oehlke logged 10 assists in the match, and Jatelyn Johnson recorded nine. Libero Mariah Voeltz led the team with 16 digs. Klinger took 14 digs on the evening.

The Hilltoppers have not had more than three conference wins since 2005.

They picked up their third Dunn-St. Croix win of 2017 in their final conference matchup in Elmwood last Thursday, October 12. The Toppers lost the first set 25-22, but climbed back on top with wins in the next three sets –  25-22, 25-23, and 25-12.

Coach Christa Blaser said the win was a team effort, with everyone having a hand in the Toppers’ success.

Senior Jenesa Klinger broke her kill percentage with a tally of 86.7 percent. She recorded 13 kills, and made another 36 swings that stayed in play. Delaney Quinn took credit for another 10 kills, Tressa Peskar logged 10, Madelyn Oehlke recorded four, Mariah Voeltz chalked up three, and Abby Kremer and Michaela Nyhus each took credit for one.

Voeltz racked up 25 digs, and logged 67 serve receive digs, Madelyn Oehlke took credit for 24 assists, and Jatelyn Johnson added another 12. [/emember_protected]
