GC girls’, boys’ finish strong at Amery, run hard at Old Abe Invitational

The Hilltopper cross country teams split their time between Amery and Eau Claire last week in preparation for this week’s Dunn-St. Croix conference meet.

Coach Matt Schutz took the Toppers to Amery October 3, where the girls walked away with a second-place team finish behind Osceola after scoring 58 points. The boys’ were eighth out of 12 teams at the meet.

[emember_protected] The final competition Glenwood City saw prior to heading to Colfax this Thursday for the conference meet was the Old Abe Invitational held at Eau Claire’s South Middle School last Saturday, October 7. The girls finished 11th out of 15 schools with a score of 286, and the boys’ team was 17th out of 17 with a score of 446.

With the regular season of invitationals complete, the Hilltoppers focus their attention to the 2017 D-SC conference meet to be held October 12 at Colfax’s Whitetail Golf Course. The WIAA Division 3 sectional race is set for Saturday, October 21 at Boyceville’s Tiffany Creek Elementary School.

The state meet will be held October 28 in Wisconsin Rapids.

Amery Invitational

There does not seem to be a course, a group of teams, or a meet the Glenwood City ladies cannot conquer this year.

The Lady Hilltoppers proved their running prowess yet again this season with a second-place finish at the October 3 Amery Invitational after picking up just 58 points. The boys’ team finished eighth out of 12 teams at the meet after scoring 186.

Sophomore Isabella Williams took eighth place in the race, edging out junior Julia Dinkel – who took ninth – with a time of 23:15.46 to Dinkel’s 23:15.47. Makayla O’Brien was the next GC runner to finish the girls’ race, taking a time of 24:02.45 for 15th.

Emily Bethell was back on the course after coach Schutz reported she had some hip trouble. The sophomore earned 16th after running a 24:04.74 race.

Megan Speiser, Elizabeth Wink and Gabrielle Moede completed the Hilltopper girls’ team. Speiser placed 20th after a 24:12.94 run, Wink finished in 24:42.71 for 27th, and Moede took 31st with a time of 24:54.63.

Osceola’s Lauren Ellefson won the individual race in 21:43.72 to help the Lady Chieftains to a team win with just 37 points.

Glenwood City senior Jacob Nadeau continued his streak of team leadership at Amery, placing 27th with a time of 20:18.11. Jabin Hojem and Matthew Bauman were not far behind him, taking 30th for a 20:49.18 run and 31st with a time of 20:52.93.

Matthew O’Brien picked up 45th after finishing in 21:35.59, Elijah Simmons ran a 22:09.99 race for 56th, and Bradley Kessler finished in 61st with a 22:44.50 effort.

Birchwood sophomore Matthew Marcinske finished in 18:15.92 for the race win, but it was the Osceola boys’ who took home the team trophy with just 47 points.

Old Abe Invitational

The Glenwood City girls’ team continued a more-than-respectable season at Eau Claire’s South Middle School in the Old Abe Invitational October 7.

While they were 11th out of 15 teams, it should be noted at least 10 of those teams compete at the Division 1 and 2 level in the WIAA.

The boys’ also finished the day 17th out of 17 on a wet, rainy, cold course.

Isabella Williams was the first of the Lady Hilltoppers to cross the finish line, running a 20:13.1 race for 34th overall. Julia Dinkel was 56th after her 20:52.5 run, and Makayla O’Brien finished in 21:19.0 to take 69th.

Emily Bethell continues to work her way back from a hip injury, and took 73rd with a time of 21:24.5 in the race. Senior Megan Speiser ran a 21:24.7 race for 75th, and Gabby Moede finished 82nd with a time of 21:55.5.

Elizabeth Wink rounded out the team with a 21:59.5 race for 85th.

Hudson sophomore Rachel Ball copped the race win with a time of 17:53.8 to help the Lady Raiders win the team trophy after accruing just 35 points.

Hilltopper senior Jacob Nadeau was the first GC boy to the finish line in the Saturday race, taking 55th with his 18:11.2 run. Jabin Hojem was a scant minute behind Nadeau, and finished the race in 19:10.8 for 92nd.

Matthew Bauman took 101st with his 19:27.7 run, Matthew O’Brien ran a 19:57.6 for 108th, and Bradley Kessler was 125th with a time of 22:52.8.

Eau Claire Memorial junior Zak Sather won the individual race in 16:16.8 to help the Old Abes take the boys’ team win with 50 points.
