GC girls’ cross country takes third at Barron Invite, boys finish eighth

It was another nice meet for the Lady Hilltoppers in Barron last Tuesday.

In its only meet of the week, Glenwood City competed in the Barron Cross Country Invitational held Tuesday, September 19. The girls finished third in a field of 12 with 91 points, while the boys were eighth out of 12 with 174 points.

[emember_protected] Sophomore Emily Bethell led the girls to the finish line in 25:24.1 to take 11th place, and senior Makayla O’Brien was just 24 seconds behind to take 14th with a final time of 25:48.2. Megan Speiser raced to 19th place with a time of 26:04.2.

Gabby Moede and Julia Dinkel took 23rd and 24th after finishing their races in 26:22.2 and 26:31.2. Elizabeth Wink and Myah Eliason completed the scored runners, finishing in 32nd and 56th after races of 27:23.4 and 29:19.1.

Hanna Strehlo, Annika Bauman, Emma Scholler, Alexis Swanepoel and Marie Schmidt also competed in the race for the Hilltoppers.

Somerset senior Anya Swanson copped the race with in 23:04.3, but it was Hayward’s Lady Hurricanes who took the top team spot after having five runners finish in the top 10.

Jacob Nadeau was the first Glenwood City runner across the line at Barron. He earned 14th with a time of 21:18.6. Jabin Hojem raced to the finish in 22:41.6, and Matthew Bauman finished in 23:01.0 to take 29th and 37th respectively.

Matthew O’Brien and Elijah Simmons were the fourth and fifth runners to finish he boys’ race for GC. O’Brien took 48th with his 24:00.8 run, and Simmons was 53rd after finishing in 24:09.6. Bradley Kessler earned 69th with his 25:22.7 race, and Henry Wallin finished in 27:34.4 to take 98th.

Kyle Meyers completed the boys’ team competing at Barron.

The Rice Lake boys’ won the team competition with just 83 points, but it was Cameron freshman Josh Halverson who ran away with the individual race win after crossing the line in 19:49.7.

Glenwood City headed to Colfax’s Whitetail Golf and Supper Club September 25 for the first conference meet of the season before going to Spring Valley September 28. The Toppers are scheduled to race at Amery October 3.
